It's been an eventful week in the District with the 2026 Primary Election and the Council's preparation for next week's second vote on the FY27 budget. Tomorrow and Saturday also bring big events our way with the celebration of Juneteenth and Capital Pride.
Tomorrow's holiday marks 161 years since the news of freedom reached enslaved people in Galveston, TX. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two and half years prior, word did not reach parts of the country—including Galveston, TX—until Union soldiers advanced to share the good news, bringing an end to the centuries-long scourge and stain of slavery. Since then, generations of the descendants of enslaved people have marked June 19—or Juneteenth—as a celebration of liberation and a memorial for those for whom freedom was never fully realized. May our observance of tomorrow's holiday deepen our commitment to true liberty and justice for all.
Please note that as the District observes Juneteenth, many government services will be modified. You can find a full overview at this link, but here's a quick rundown:
- The Department of Public Works (DPW) will not collect household trash, recycling, or food waste on Friday, June 19. Collections will "slide" for the rest of the week into Saturday.
- The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed to the public on Friday, June 19. All services will resume on Saturday, June 20 for bulk trash and recycling.
- All DC Public Library locations will be closed on Friday, June 19, and will reopen on Saturday, June 20.
- All Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) recreation centers, outdoor pools, indoor aquatic centers, spray parks, and offices will be closed on Friday, June 19. Outdoor parks, fields, and playgrounds will be open. Facilities will resume normal hours on Saturday, June 20.
- All parking enforcement will be suspended on Friday, June 19, and all Department of Motor Vehicle locations will be closed.
- Metrobus and Metrorail with operate on modified schedules for the Juneteenth holiday, and on Saturday, several bus routes will be on detour due to the Pride Parade along 14th Street from T Street to Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
On Saturday, the District will hold its annual Capital Pride Parade in celebration of Pride Month! Whether you plan to join the festivities or just want to be prepared for road closures and parking restrictions, check out the parade map here. Happy Pride!

This week also marked the end of school for DC Public Schools! Congratulations to all our teachers and students on a great year. As I shared in previous newsletters, we want to celebrate all our graduates, so we are asking neighbors to email us with info about your favorite graduate this year. Tell us their name, where they're graduating from, and share a picture or two if you'd like. Congratulations again to the Class of 2026!
Finally, please mark your calendar and register for next Wednesday, June 24 at 3:00 p.m. for the Ward 5 Public Safety Call. These recurring calls are an opportunity to hear directly from District public safety agencies, get updates on incidents and crime trends, and ask questions about public safety in your neighborhood. If you can't make it, the call will be recorded and shared on my YouTube channel afterward, and the slides and recording will be posted in next week's newsletter. My team also connected with residents in Ivy City at Bethesda Baptist's Community Day. Thanks to everyone who came out and to all the organizations that help our communities thrive!

ANC and Civic Association Meetings
|
This week, my team and I attended the Bloomingdale Civic Association, Gateway Civic Association, Hanover Civic Association, and ANC 5B meetings. Here's a brief recap:
- Bloomingdale Civic Association (June 15 at 7:00 p.m.):
- Residents received updates from Scott Roberts regarding the future of the 1600 North Capitol Street NW site, commonly known as the Joe Mamo Lot. Commissioner Kirby also provided an update on the McMillan Scholarship Program and encouraged neighbors to help spread the word so eligible students in Wards 1 and 5 can apply. Additionally, the association recognized two student awardees of the Bloomingdale Dr. Bertha G. Holliday Scholarship Program and celebrated their academic achievements.
- Gateway Civic Association (June 15 at 7:00 p.m.):
- I joined the Gateway Civic Association's last meeting before their summer recess and recapped the Council’s budget process. I also shared about my position on the Power Nightclub and its impacts on the community. I explained my letter of protest for the establishment's recent ABCA application to neighbors and my choice to include traffic calming measures. Lastly, I answered questions neighbors had about traffic safety and WMATA.
- Hanover Civic Association (June 17 at 6:30 p.m.):
- My team joined the association's meeting to discuss multiple topics including parking enforcement, routine trash collection, and neighborhood safety updates. My team also answered questions about the proper protocol for alerting the city to noise complaints and rodent issues. Finally, association members reflected on their successful Earth Day trash pick-up event and outlined upcoming events for later in the summer.
- ANC 5B (June 17 at 7:00 p.m.):
- Commissioners discussed a proposed public art installation by local artist Charles Burger for the fence in front of Sojourner Truth PCS. They expressed interest in the project but decided to postpone a vote until July to allow additional time for review. The commission also heard a presentation from DC Justice Lab on its work and criminal justice initiatives in the District. Representatives from both MPD's Fourth and Fifth Districts attended the meeting and provided public safety updates. Finally, commissioners voted to support BZA Case 21439, a special exception application for 1908 Irving Street NE, ahead of the Board of Zoning Adjustment hearing scheduled for June 24.
