Dear Neighbors,
On Sunday, our office is hosting a “Shred Event” with Senator Feigenholtz and State Representative Croke at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum from 10 am -1 pm. Swing by with any papers and electronics that you would like to have securely destroyed and recycled. There is a limit of 2 boxes/containers per household and we ask that you please remove all heavy-duty staples, paper clips, metal fasteners, and rubber bands ahead. In addition, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s office will be at the event as a part of their “Prescription Drug Takeback” program.
|
At the Shred Event, our office will also provide “dog cleanup signs”, Narcan, and Fentanyl testing strips. Earlier this year, the 43rd Ward Office completed training to become an official provider of Narcan (also known as Naloxone, more info here), the life-saving medication that can prevent a fatal opioid overdose. Thanks to increased awareness, Chicago and Cook County are on pace to see a drastic decline in opioid-related fatalities in 2024. Year-to-date, opioid deaths in Chicago are down more than 40%. However, there is still a long way to go. Many of us have been, or know someone who has been, tragically impacted by the fentanyl crisis in America. Two-thirds of the accidental drug-related overdoses in America in 2022 involved fentanyl, a majority of whom had no intention of taking fentanyl. After speaking with many students in the ward on the topic, it became clear that leading the push for Narcan access in Chicago was an essential way to do so. Please come to our office (or any Chicago Public Library) to get a free Narcan nasal spray canister, and help us spread the word to friends on why they should do the same.
As we continue to invest in the 43rd Ward’s parks, the Trebes Park renovation has begun! To reduce inconvenience during construction, we are working with Oscar Mayer School to assist in finding space for previously planned events. Through consistent leadership by the Trebes Park Advisory Council (TPAC), specifically TPAC President Scott Kaeser, community discussions related to this renovation began in 2019. Funded through grants from the city, state, and county, the result will be a revitalization of a park used and loved by many in the neighborhood. For specific information, please click here.
|
Looking into next year, our office has also been working closely with the Wrightwood Neighbors Association and the Jonquil Park Advisory Council on a project to upgrade Jonquil Park. Currently, this project is anticipated to begin in October 2025 and is expected to include re-grading and re-seeding the field and area around the playground, replacing the soft surface around the playground, improving the baseball backstop and benches, and adding additional lighting around the park. The details, scope, and funding are still being worked out with the Park District and other stakeholders. If you would like more information or to get involved, please reach out to wrightwoodneighbors@gmail.com.
Finally, this week I met with representatives from the Chicago Advocacy Network (CAN) and the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center as a part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Last year, the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline received 218 calls and 12 texts reporting incidents by residents of the 43rd Ward. Our ward represents one of the lowest contact areas to the service in Chicago; however, it is still far too many. We can all support CAN’s important work by educating our communities on the services provided. In addition, our local 19th District police officers are collecting donations of lightly used clothing for survivors of domestic violence. If you have items to donate, please drop them off at the 19th District station at 850 W Addison by October 25th. Click here for a flier to share.

P.S. Check out some photos from a busy week in the 43rd Ward!

As our city government and safety leadership transition into the next Administration, crime, and safety remain top of mind for our community. Each week, the 18th and 19th District post Compstat numbers that reflect changes in indexes for key crimes. In an effort to keep residents informed on these trends, we will publish those weekly updates in the newsletter’s public safety section. As a reminder, these statistics represent 100% of the 18th and 19th Police Districts; accordingly, they represent an area much larger than our ward.
For 18th District (south of Fullerton) Compstat,
For 19th District (north of Fullerton) Compstat,
We encourage residents to check out the Chicago Police Department's citywide September year-to-date recap, which outlines their key initiatives and statistical trends on high-priority violent crimes. You can view the full report here.

We work closely with the 43rd Ward’s local CAPS districts, which include the 18th (Near North) and 19th (Town Hall) Police Districts.

Federal Individual Financial Assistance Through FEMA
|
On September 20th, President Joe Biden declared a major disaster for Cook County (including the City of Chicago) due to the severe storms, tornados, and derecho damage from July 13-16, 2024. This declaration means that residents impacted by these storms will be eligible for Federal individual financial assistance through FEMA, as well as other programs offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can immediately begin applying for assistance: (1) at www.disasterassistance.gov; (2) by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362); or (3) by using the FEMA App. (Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service).

Parking Enforcement via 311

- Commercial Loading Zone
- Commercial Vehicle Parked on a Residential Street
- Disabled Parking
- Fire Hydrant Parking
- Residential Parking
- Rush Hour Zones
- School Safety Zones
- Vehicle Parked in Bike Lane
- Other (Semi-trucks parked on streets, etc.)
Where previously only bike lane violations could be reported on 311, the DOF has now expanded the ability to report parking violations, to drive more community-based enforcement.
Neighbors can report parking violations by calling 311, using the CHI311 app, or through the 311 website. The request type is “Finance Parking Code Enforcement Review.”

Have questions about street work happening in your area? The Department of Transportation has a wonderful tool to look up street work in your area called the Chi Street Work Portal. Here you can input an address and see all surrounding permits for projects on that street.
|
I want to keep spreading the good word of how powerful a tool CHI 311 is to address non-emergency services in our Ward. Via the CHI 311 website and mobile app, you can:
- Create new service requests and check the status of existing requests (such as on timing and completion).
- Snap a photo of an issue to submit it with a request to improve location accuracy.
- Get local and relevant information/tips regarding the 43rd Ward including visibility into what other requests are being made in your neighborhood. The free CHI 311 mobile app is available for both iOS and Android devices and may be downloaded in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
