October 2025 Newsletter

Aloha,

In October, we launched the Digital Navigator program in partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System, helping residents build essential digital skills through one-on-one sessions. We also celebrated the opening of the state’s 100th public pre-K classroom at Maunawili Elementary School.

This month, we also celebrated Cybersecurity Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of staying alert and safe from online threats to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Please stay connected with us on Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), and my Website for the latest updates. Your thoughts, feedback, and ideas are always welcome.

Mahalo!

Digital Navigator Program Launches to
Promote Digital Literacy and Skills

As part of the Connect Kākou initiative, we’re committed to ensuring that everyone across our state has access to the internet. Achieving this means investing not only in infrastructure and devices, but also in the knowledge and skills that empower people to use the internet effectively.

Earlier this month, we announced the launch of the Digital Navigator program in partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System. This program offers residents one-on-one sessions with trained navigators to help build their digital knowledge, skills, and confidence. Navigators can help patrons with a wide range of topics through tech support, guidance, or tutoring, including:

  • Setting up an email

  • Applying for jobs

  • Filling out online forms

  • Connecting with loved ones

  • Learning to use your device

  • Staying safe online

From telehealth and education to government services – our lives are becoming increasingly online, and it is our kuleana to ensure that everyone has the skills and accessibility to thrive online.

100th Public Pre-K Marks Milestone for
Early Learning in Hawaiʻi

In October, we reached an exciting milestone toward making preschool accessible for every keiki across Hawaiʻi with the opening of the state’s 100th public pre-K classroom at Maunawili Elementary School in Kailua, Oʻahu.  I joined the Executive Office on Early Learning (EOEL) to celebrate this special occasion with the students, teachers, and faculty at Maunawili.

This milestone is a powerful testament to the progress we’ve achieved for early education in Hawaiʻi. Mahalo to our Ready Keiki partners, teachers, and families for helping make this vision a reality. Every new classroom brings us one step closer to ensuring that all Hawaiʻi’s keiki are ready to learn, grow, and thrive.

Strengthening Hawaiʻi’s Broadband Future

I had the opportunity to visit Spectrum’s Hawaiʻi broadband facility and see firsthand the incredible work that goes into building and maintaining the fiber network that keeps our island communities connected. From the skilled technicians to the advanced infrastructure, it’s clear that ensuring reliable, high-speed internet for every Hawaiʻi resident requires dedication, innovation, and long-term planning.

Expanding and strengthening our broadband network isn’t just about faster speeds — it’s about creating opportunities, supporting local businesses, connecting families, and building a foundation that will serve Hawaiʻi for generations to come.

Celebrating Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month — an important reminder to remain vigilant and protect yourself and your loved ones online. As we expand internet access statewide through Connect Kākou, it’s more important than ever to stay cyber smart. Even small actions, like pausing before you click, help keep our entire community safe.

Check out this reel for a spooky cybersecurity tale that could happen to any of us. Remember to stay alert, stay secure, and think before you click. Learn more about online safety at cyberhawaii.org.
