This week, I was honored to attend the Academic Athlete’s ribbon-cutting event at their new home on West Philadelphia Street!

Academic Athlete focuses on bridging the gap between athletics and academics by empowering student-athletes with the tools, discipline, and real-world exposure needed to succeed beyond sports. This new space allows them to expand their programming, host students more intentionally, and create a consistent environment for hands-on learning, mentorship, and community engagement.

I was pleased to join them for the ribbon-cutting, a tour of the new facility, and to learn more about their mission and the work they are doing throughout the York community!

Mayor Sandie Walker will host the return of State of the City on Thursday, October 1, inviting York residents, businesses, community leaders, and partners to come together for an evening focused on the city’s progress, priorities, and future.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts and will provide an opportunity to hear directly from Mayor Walker about where York stands today, the progress being made across the city and the work ahead.

“The future of York is being built every day - block by block, business by business, and neighborhood by neighborhood,” said Mayor Walker. “State of the City is an opportunity to celebrate the progress we’ve made together, talk openly about where we’re headed and recognize the people who are helping build the York we all want to see.”

The evening will explore the priorities shaping York’s future and highlight the people, partnerships, and work helping move those priorities forward.

“This isn’t just about looking back at what we’ve accomplished,” Walker said. “It’s about looking ahead and asking what’s possible when we continue working together. I’m excited to share where we are, where we’re going and the vision we’re building for York’s future.”

State of the City is free and open to everyone, but registration is required. Complimentary light appetizers will be available, along with a cash bar. The evening will include live performances & the Mayor’s Award Recognitions.

On Wednesday, I was honored to speak in a Legislative Panel hosted by Penn State’s School of Public Policy. The panel was part of Penn State’s Liberal Arts Harrisburg Career Exploration Day at the PA Chamber of Business and Industry.

The panel allowed students to hear from legislative leaders about career paths and the role of elected officials.

This experiential learning opportunity provides around 60-70 Liberal Arts students with direct exposure to careers in government, public policy, advocacy, and public service. Students were able to engage with leaders and professionals from across the Commonwealth while exploring career pathways and learning about public sector employment.

I wish all the Penn State students’ luck in their educational careers and sincerely hope that they receive an abundance of information today!

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives Legislative Fellowship Program is accepting applications for the Spring 2027 semester.

The Fellowship Program is based in Pennsylvania’s magnificent Capitol Building in Harrisburg. Fellows are assigned to work in House Committees or House Leadership offices, are compensated for their work (which may also include college credit), and are provided opportunities to draft and present their own legislation, attend meet-and-greets with various public officials and staff, and tour some of the Commonwealth’s historic public spaces, to name a few.

Qualified applicants will be:

•           College undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or law school students;

•           Enrolled in a Pennsylvania college/university, or a Pennsylvania resident enrolled in an out-of-state institution; and

•           Pursuing any major with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

DMVA’s Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy Now Accepting Applications for First 2027 Class

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ (DMVA) Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is now accepting applications for its first class of 2027, which begins in January. There is no tuition cost to attend, and meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.

A cornerstone of DMVA’s outreach, KSCA’s mission of providing teens in jeopardy of not graduating on time or dropping out of school with a second chance at obtaining their basic education is centered around the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program’s 8 Core Components: leadership; self-discipline; job skills; health and hygiene; values of community service and civic duty; physical fitness; responsibility to build a better life. To meet growing demand for the program, the 2026-27 budget signed by Governor Shapiro increased funding for KSCA by $80,000.

Unclaimed property comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Treasury; this property it is typically safeguarded money and assets that have been inactive or unclaimed for a legally defined period. Through our office, we are working to get these unclaimed assets back into the hands of our constituents.

Our office is sending letters to constituents who might have unclaimed property associated with their address. If you receive a letter from us, we encourage you to review the information provided and contact our office by phone or email with any questions or if you need help. We are happy to simplify the process and provide additional information!

2026/27 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Season is almost here.

This season opens Monday, November 2 and will continue through Friday, April 23, 2027. Customers who received LIHEAP last season will receive a 2026/27 LIHEAP application or COMPASS postcard with a registration number that allows these customers to apply before the start of the season.

Customers who didn't receive LIHEAP last season may request an application on or after November 2 by: Applying online at www.compass.state.pa.us (on or after November 2), Contacting their local County Assistance Office by phone or in person, calling the LIHEAP Client Helpline at 1-866-857-7095.

Additionally, my office is available to assist with any LIHEAP claims. If you have any questions or want to see if you qualify, call 717-848-9595 or respond to this email!

The Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services (FCEMS) Grant is an annual program administered by the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner to support volunteer and career fire companies, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue squads.

Applicants can combine up to two projects from these categories:

1. Facilities – Construction/renovation of facilities, purchase/repair of fixtures/furnishings to improve fire, ambulance, and rescue capabilities.
2. Equipment – Purchase/repair of firefighting, ambulance, or rescue equipment (including fuel for company vehicles).
3. Debt Reduction – Reduction of debt related to facilities or equipment.
4. Training – Certification of members; overtime for backfilling during training.
5. Training & Education – Public fire prevention materials.
6. Recruitment & Retention – Volunteer length-of-service awards, programs for minors.
7. Construction Savings Account – For fire companies only

Commonwealth Financing Authority: Solar for Schools Program

Who May Apply: A school district, intermediate unit, area career and technical school, charter school, cyber charter school, regional chartered school for the education of the deaf or blind, a community college, the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, the Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Use: Purchase and installation of equipment for a solar energy project, energy storage costs related to the storage of electricity, engineering, design, and inspection costs, site preparation for ground mounted systems, or any other cost associated with a solar energy project.

Funds: $25 million in state funding is available.

Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until funds are depleted.

Commission on Crime and Delinquency: School Safety & Mental Health Grants

Who May Apply: School Districts, Intermediate Units, Area Career and Technical Schools, Charter Schools, Regional Charter Schools, and Cyber Charter Schools

Use: To provide grants to eligible school entities to support physical security enhancements and/or mental health initiatives

Funds: A total of $138,779,000 in state funding is being announced to support this initiative. Funding is based on the formula included in 24 P.S. §13-1314.3-B, which stipulates school districts are to receive a $100,000 base amount for their grant, and an additional amount based on their 2024-25 Adjusted Average Daily Membership (AADM). All other eligible school entities (i.e., intermediate units, area career and technical schools, charter schools, regional charter schools, and cyber charter schools) are to receive $70,000

As we prepare for the upcoming tax season, our local AARP Tax-Aide program is gearing up to offer free tax preparation to seniors and low-income residents in our community!

Volunteers are needed throughout York County for the spring 2027 tax season. No previous tax experience requires patience, friendliness, and a desire to help others.

Volunteering with Tax-Aide is more than an opportunity to help your neighbors. It’s a chance to learn new skills, keep your mind active, meet new people, work as part of a friendly team, and experience the satisfaction of making a real difference in someone’s life.

You don’t need to be a tax expert. Volunteers receive comprehensive training and ongoing support, and there are several roles to match your interests and abilities.

Ways You Can Help

·           Prepare tax returns after completing comprehensive training

·           Welcome clients as a greeter or help schedule appointments

·           Provide administrative, instructional, or technology support

·           Assist community members as a translator

Your service makes a difference. Last year, nearly 100 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 4,300 taxpayers file their federal, Pennsylvania, and local tax returns in York County.
