Dear Neighbors,
This week we sent two special newsletters. The first, an important reminder of parking protocols and street closures ahead of this Sunday’s Chicago Marathon. The second, an update on the Chicago Board of Election, local development, and mailers sent in our ward. Click the hyperlinks above to review.
Today, we unveiled “Drew Price Way” at the corner of Lincoln & Fullerton in honor of Andrew “Drew” Price, Chicago hero and beloved firefighter of the 43rd Ward’s Engine 55 Truck 44. Almost one year ago, Drew passed away on duty while responding to a fire in Lincoln Park. The ceremony was widely attended by firefighters, family and community members, who remember Drew for his positivity and the impact he had on their lives.

Drew’s legacy will have an impact in Chicago for years to come. This week at City Council, we passed the “Drew Price Ordinance”, a law that will require new buildings with skylights (or other roof openings) to secure openings with additional protective layers. This is essential for firefighter safety, as they wear heavy gear on rooftops while responding to emergencies. Additionally, we passed the “Firefighters in the Line of Duty Death Ordinance” that will create a bereavement for firefighters after they lose a firehouse coworker on their shift in the line of duty. I look forward to continuing to lead on legislation to support Chicago’s first responders.
Special thanks to 43rd Ward team member Maggie Walsh for coordinating and organizing this event.
To kickoff marathon weekend, on Saturday 43rd Warder Matt Brusich will run his own “homegrown marathon” around his block along Cleveland, Dickens, Mohawk and Armitage. It will take 79 laps until he crosses the 26.2-mile marker, which he is doing to raise money for Lincoln Park Community Services’ mission for Chicago’s homeless community. Check out the Block Club Article here on Matt’s journey, and remember, it is never a bad idea to have some fun for a good cause!

P.S. As we head into fall, please remember to bag leaves and submit a 311 request for yard waste pickup here or contact our office instead of blowing or sweeping them into the street—this helps prevent muck and debris buildup.
P.P.S. This year the 43rd Ward welcomed The Kensington School, an early education and care facility at 2745 N. Lincoln Avenue. In opening a branch in the 43rd Ward, The Kensington School invested in building a brand new facility. On Thursday, November 7th, we are co-hosting a tour of the new space. As our city government and safety leadership transition into the next Administration, crime, and safety remain top of mind for our community. Each week, the 18th and 19th District post Compstat numbers that reflect changes in indexes for key crimes. In an effort to keep residents informed on these trends, we will publish those weekly updates in the newsletter’s public safety section. As a reminder, these statistics represent 100% of the 18th and 19th Police Districts; accordingly, they represent an area much larger than our ward.
For 18th District (south of Fullerton) Compstat,
For 19th District (north of Fullerton) Compstat,
We encourage residents to check out the Chicago Police Department's citywide September year-to-date recap, which outlines their key initiatives and statistical trends on high-priority violent crimes. You can view the full report here.

See Something Say Something Public Safety Campaign
|
If You See Something, Say Something is a national anti-terrorism public awareness campaign that emphasizes the importance of reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement. We want to remind everyone to be aware of their surroundings in large gatherings, at work, schools, places of worship, critical facilities and online, and to report suspicious activity. If you notice something suspicious, please call 9-1-1. Employees should report anything suspicious through their chain of command and call 9-1-1 for any immediate, obvious threat. The OEMC has put together the following social media toolkit that you can use to create your own posts. DHS has also developed training videos and suspicious activity indicators to assist with recognizing the kinds of suspicious behaviors that may be related to terrorism activities; understanding how and where to report this information; and protecting privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties when reporting information.

Federal Individual Financial Assistance Through FEMA
|
On September 20th, President Joe Biden declared a major disaster for Cook County (including the City of Chicago) due to the severe storms, tornados, and derecho damage from July 13-16, 2024. This declaration means that residents impacted by these storms will be eligible for Federal individual financial assistance through FEMA, as well as other programs offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can immediately begin applying for assistance: (1) at www.disasterassistance.gov; (2) by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362); or (3) by using the FEMA App. (Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service).
For more information, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s site here.
