My e-bike policy is coming back and I need your support
|
For the last year, many of you have stopped me in the grocery store, at Costco, at the library, and even hiking in Mission Trails, to tell me about a dangerous event you saw or experienced from young people riding e-bikes irresponsibly. So, in February, I announced my Safe Routes to School initiative to introduce new e-bike regulations.
Next week, it will come to the full City Council, and I need your help to get it over the finish line.
The initiative seeks to increase safety for children as well as reduce reckless riding and incidents. The proposed regulations would also promote education-first enforcement, strengthening youth training and accountability. A comprehensive public outreach campaign would be launched following City Council approval of the regulations. The new regulations would:
I encourage you to participate in the upcoming City Council hearing and make your voice heard. You can click here view the agenda for information on attending in person or virtually, or click here to submit a pre-written comment. Your support can help ensure these important safety measures move forward.

District 7 resident survives Grizzly Bear attack
|
You might have seen the news that a San Diego resident recently survived a Grizzly Bear attack in Glacier National Park. That resident, Daniel Crago, is a District 7 resident and regular adventurer.
Daniel recalled the harrowing story for San Diego Union Tribune, which you can read here. His quick thinking and remaining calm under immense stress saved him, alongside the life-saving medical aid provided by a nearby hiker that happened to be a doctor. Both Daniel and hikers around him rallied to save his life and prevent further injury. His story is as inspiring as it is terrifying.
Daniel, your courage is honorable and incredible. We wish you a speedy recovery!

Tierrasanta resident is a bigger soccer fan than me
|
I’m a huge fan of soccer, but I recently discovered that my love for the sport is nothing compared to that of one of our own: Tierrasanta resident Joe Connor.
San Diego Union Tribune recently shared a fun article detailing Joe Connor’s lifelong pursuit of sports experiences, a pursuit that has brought him to 47 of the 48 countries playing in this year’s World Cup.
“Soccer, Connor realized, can transcend sports and approach religion... ‘The main thing I took away from soccer is that it’s tied to the culture of not every country but a lot of the countries, especially pretty much everywhere in Africa and South America and Europe and a lot of other places,’ Connor says. ‘Just how passionate and how much the sport is tied to the identities of these countries.”
Joe, let’s grab coffee sometime! I’d love to pick your brain about the soccer greats and our favorite teams.

Childcare is a public issue
|
I’ve long advocated for affordable, high-quality childcare, especially as other costs continue to rise in San Diego. Investments in childcare aren’t just investments in San Diego families – they are investments in our economy and regional progress. A workforce with childcare is a happier and more productive workforce.
The New York Times recently published an interesting piece on the idea that childcare is a public issue rather than a private one. It’s a compelling article that describes a problem I’m sure many of you have experienced, as have I.
You can find the full article here, but I will leave a quote below that resonated with me.
“Society benefits when people get to experience a life in which they have time to care for other people — not just children, but neighbors and friends — and in turn be cared for themselves... A child surrounded by loving adults represents a robust civic life, filled with strong families, schools, congregations, friends who are so close they are called aunts and uncles. This should be the day-to-day practice of living together in a democracy.”

Navajo Family Apartments break ground
|
This week, a project to bring 45 units of affordable to District 7 broke ground.
Navajo Family Apartments represent exactly the type of housing our city needs. Projects like these are an important investment in the future of the San Carlos community and the families who will one day call this place home.
Celebrating the Navajo Family Apartments is about more than breaking ground on a new building. It is about creating opportunity, stability, and a pathway to success for working families, seniors, and individuals who are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living in San Diego.
I’m so glad to see this project kick off and look forward to its eventual completion.
