January/February 2025 Newsletter
|
Aloha,
I hope 2025 has been off to a good start! With many changes occurring across our state and nation, my office has kept busy with our initiatives and supporting our government partners.
In January, I had the opportunity to speak at the 2025 Pacific Telecommunications Conference, where global experts and leaders shared insights on staying connected in an increasingly interconnected world.
February was filled with exciting announcements. Together, with Governor Green and the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture (HDOA), we launched Akamai Arrival, a new pilot program aimed at digitizing Hawaiʻi’s agriculture declaration form. Additionally, UH Mānoa unveiled a new Bachelor’s Degree Program in Early Childhood Care and Education. We also kicked off the 26th Annual State Employees’ Food Drive in collaboration with Hawaiʻi Foodbank and the City and County of Honolulu.

Akamai Arrival: Modernizing Hawaiʻi's Agriculture Declaration Form for a Safer Future
|
After working with legislators, HDOA, airline partners, and stakeholders, together, we unveiled Akamai Arrival, a pilot program digitizing Hawaiʻi’s Plants and Animals Declaration Form. Launching on March 1, the program will be available on select domestic flights through May 31.
|
Every one of us, whether coming home or traveling to Hawaiʻi, is very familiar with filling out the paper agriculture form. With Akamai Arrival, travelers on participating flights can complete the form on their mobile devices, available in multiple languages if needed. By digitizing this form, we’re making compliance easier for travelers while using technology to protect what makes Hawaiʻi so special.

Nourishing Our ʻOhana: 26th Annual State Employees' Food Drive Kicks Off
|
In February, I joined Hawaiʻi Foodbank and the City and County of Honolulu to launch Hawaiʻi Foodbank’s 26th Annual State Employees’ Food Drive. This year, the State and City’s food drives will run from February 21 to May 9, with a joint goal of providing 515,000 meals to Hawaiʻi residents in need.
In Hawaiʻi, food insecurity affects far too many families, including 90,000 keiki. The generosity of our state employees and community members makes a real difference in ensuring that no one on in our islands goes hungry.
This annual food drive continues to be essential in providing families throughout Hawaiʻi with access to nutritious meals. Every contribution—whether large or small—makes a meaningful difference.
Anyone can support Hawaiʻi Foodbank by donating online or in-person at various food drop-off locations.

Empowering Educators with UH Mānoa’s New Early Childhood Care and Education Program
|
A strong early childhood education workforce is crucial to the Ready Keiki initiative and its goal to expand preschool access across our state. When we invest in and support our educators, we empower them to provide our keiki with the high-quality education they deserve.
I joined the UH Mānoa College of Education to announce the launch of the new Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Care and Education. This dedicated degree not only makes it easier and more accessible for future educators to enter the field but also plays a key role in addressing the critical shortage of early childhood educators in Hawaiʻi. By supporting our teachers, we help our keiki, their ʻohana, and our communities thrive.
Applications are now open for the Fall 2025 semester. If you or someone you know is interested in applying, visit coe.hawaii.edu. The application deadline is March 1, 2025.

Celebrating Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi
|
During the month of February, we celebrated Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. It’s important that we continue to incorporate the Hawaiian language not just in February, but in our everyday lives.
For Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, my friend, Lamakū, taught me some new Ready Keiki-themed Hawaiian words. Check out this video to learn some new ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi!

2025 Pacific Telecommunications Conference: Shaping the Future of Global Connectivity
|
In January, I had the honor of speaking at the 2025 Pacific Telecommunications Conference, which brought together over 7,500 participants from more than 75 countries and territories. Global telecommunications, technology, and innovation are key to shaping our interconnected future.
With Connect Kākou being one of our top priorities, it was truly inspiring to see researchers, technologists, investors, and leaders from both the public and private sectors working together to connect the Pacific Rim and beyond.
