Dear Neighbor,

The signing of LeBron James brings a renewed sense of hope and excitement to a city that could use some good news. Hope has a way of bringing people together and reminding us who we are and what’s possible. This week, I was proud to celebrate that moment while also honoring our veterans, supporting local organizations, representing our great commonwealth in Chicago, and bringing home new ideas to help build a stronger Pennsylvania for everyone.

Pennsylvania is now the home of one of the greatest athletes in sports history as LeBron James announced last Friday he is joining the Philadelphia 76ers.

As a lifelong Sixers fan who grew up watching Allen Iverson, I believe LeBron will bring the same energy to the city that AI did. I have a feeling that many Sixers fans will remember the moment they heard that LeBron was joining the Sixers. 🇺🇸 Honoring Those Who Served at the Veterans Tribute Concert

I had the privilege of joining neighbors from across our community at the Annual Veterans Tribute Concert and Picnic at Gorgas Park. It was a wonderful afternoon of patriotic music, great food, classic cars, and family-friendly activities. Most importantly, it was an opportunity to honor the brave men and women who served our country.

A special thank you to Bruce Hoffman and the dedicated volunteers of the 21st Ward Veterans Association for organizing another outstanding event. Their hard work and commitment ensure our local veterans receive the recognition and appreciation they deserve, while bringing our community together in gratitude.

Meeting with Chris Johnson ☕

It was great catching up over tea in Chestnut Hill with Chris Johnson, who will likely be the new representative for the 200th Legislative District next year. The district includes Mount Airy and Germantown with a small piece of Chestnut Hill.

Chris and I have known each other for many years, dating back to his time working for Senator Bob Casey. He also brings valuable experience from the School District of Philadelphia and has long been a champion for the public institutions that strengthen our communities, including our schools, parks, and libraries.

Supporting our Roxbury Library 📚

I stopped by the Roxborough Library Book Sale last weekend and picked up a great photography book while supporting an even greater cause.

The sale features donated books, and every purchase helps the Friends of the Roxborough Library provide resources that make our library even stronger. Proceeds help fund library materials, museum passes that patrons can check out, furniture, and programs like the Teen Center.

😊 Disagreeing Better

One of the first sessions I attended at the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) Summit in Chicago featured Speaker Joanna McClinton, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt discussing something our country needs more of: how to disagree better.

Hosted by Disagree Better, the conversation focused on working across the aisle together to solve problems. I was especially glad to attend because I recently filmed a Disagree Better public service announcement with my Republican colleague, Representative Abby Major. I’ll be sharing it soon!

We don’t have to agree on everything to treat each other with respect. In fact, the challenge is finding a path through our different approaches to move Pennsylvania forward together.

One thing I think will find consensus is that Pennsylvania is doing a lot of good things. I had the honor of representing our state at the roll call for NCSL. Click here or the image below to watch the video:

📰In the News: Regulating Prediction Markets

My bipartisan legislation to regulate prediction markets in Pennsylvania is receiving national attention.

The bill would establish clear consumer protections for platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket while allowing lawful sports event contracts to continue. It includes safeguards against insider trading, market manipulation, conflicts of interest, and underage participation, helping ensure these rapidly growing markets operate with transparency and integrity.

During a session at the legislative conference in Chicago, I also questioned prediction market operator Kalshi about combatting insider trading, and urged them to promote 1 800 GAMBLER on their ads and among their users.

🇩🇪 Strengthening Ties with Germany

While in Chicago for the NCSL Legislative Summit, I also attended the launch of the American-German State Legislators Caucus. As Germany is one of the United States’ largest trading partners, building strong relationships and learning from one another benefits both of our countries.

This caucus is also personal for me. My grandfather’s family came from Germany’s Black Forest region, and I grew up enjoying family traditions like German potato salad, potato soup, and German pancakes.

I look forward to working with colleagues here and abroad to strengthen the economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties between Pennsylvania and Germany.

National Blood Crisis

🩸 I took a few minutes at the National Conference of State Legislatures to donate blood.

The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis, and there is a severe lack of donors. So, it is more important now than ever to donate. Just one donation can help save up to three lives, and the actual donation usually takes about 10 minutes. From check-in to walking out the door, I’m typically finished in under 45 minutes.

Behind-the-Scenes at a Chicago Dispensary

While in Chicago for the NCSL Legislative Summit, I toured the Sunnyside River North dispensary to see how Illinois regulates adult-use cannabis.

What struck me most was how clean, organized, friendly, and routine the business was.

Illinois is one of 24 states where adult-use cannabis is legal, and every state bordering Pennsylvania except West Virginia has legalized it. Illinois also generates roughly $500 million a year in cannabis tax revenue, which they use to help fund schools, mental health, and other essential state services.

Meanwhile, nearly 6 in 10 Pennsylvania adults have tried cannabis, despite adult-use cannabis remaining illegal here.

A regulated market allows the state to test products, limit potency, ensure accurate labeling, and better protect consumers from the risks of the illicit market.

After seeing Illinois’ system firsthand, I remain supportive of legalizing and regulating adult-use cannabis in Pennsylvania. That’s why I’ve cosponsored several bills to create a safe, regulated cannabis market that protects public health and consumers.

🥚Cracking a World Record

I was honored to offer remarks at the Woodmere Art Museum as Marta Sánchez and Cascarones Por La Vida brought the community together for a Guinness World Record attempt by simultaneously cracking colorful cascarones over one another’s heads for good luck.

Beyond the fun, the event raised awareness and support for Camp Dreamcatcher, helping children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Congratulations to Marta and everyone who made this joyful celebration of art, culture, and community possible. We’ll have to await word from Guinness, but I believe we broke the record!

🌱East Falls Community Clean-Up

Join us next Saturday, August 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a community clean-up around the East Falls Farmers Market and Midvale Avenue. The East Falls Development Corporation and East Falls Town Watch will provide all the equipment you need.
