I know that San Diegans have a lot of important questions about our City – how decisions are made, what’s being done to address key issues, and what’s ahead for our communities. So, I’m launching “Ask the Mayor,” a new feature in this newsletter and on social media where I’ll answer the questions you want to know the answers to.
Chances are, if you have something on your mind, other residents do, too!
• Send in your questions – about city policies, upcoming projects, or anything else on your mind. Simply reply to this email.
• Each week, you’ll have the chance to vote on the top questions submitted.
• I’ll answer the most pressing ones in an upcoming newsletter.
We’ve already compiled some great questions we’ve received from San Diegans, like:
• Cost-of-living has skyrocketed. What is the City doing to make San Diego more affordable?
• Will the upcoming budget cuts impact public safety and response times?
• How does the City decide which streets get fixed?
If you have a question, email it to me at mayortoddgloria@sandiego.gov and ask away. And, even if you don’t quite yet, you can still weigh-in by emailing me and voting for one of the questions above that you would like to have answered by me.
As always, it’s an honor to serve as your Mayor.

Transforming Public Land into Affordable Homes for Veterans and Families
|
To help make this project possible, the City of San Diego is providing $4 million through Bridge to Home, an innovative City program that has already helped create 1,353 affordable homes across San Diego.
The City Council recently approved a long-term lease with Community HousingWorks to develop the Serra Mesa Apartments on Sandrock Road. The City Council also approved funding for another Bridge to Home project—the Navajo Family Apartments—which will add 44 more affordable homes, including units for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
These projects demonstrate how we're turning underused public land into much-needed housing — ensuring more San Diegans can have a roof over their head at a price they can afford.

Why the State’s HHAP Funding Must Continue: Fighting for the Funding We’re Using to Reduce Homelessness
|
When Keaton and her two young sons arrived at a City Safe Parking lot, they were out of options. After bouncing between hotels and at risk of winding up on the streets, the family finally found a community in our Safe Parking program. The program supported them in securing employment, housing, and getting a fresh start. Keaton described the program as life-changing, saying, “I could finally breathe.”
Success stories like Keaton’s are why I and the rest of the California Big City Mayors are pushing for continued State funding for the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (HHAP) program. Over the past four years, HHAP has helped more than 13,000 people in San Diego get services and shelter; reunited nearly 2,000 individuals with family; and funded efforts that have reduced downtown tent encampments significantly.
We’ve made real progress that we can see on our streets, but without continued, permanent funding, these critical programs could disappear—leaving thousands without the support they need. That’s why we’ve been testifying at state budget hearings, urging legislators to fully fund HHAP Round 7 at no less than $1 billion and make this funding permanent.
We cannot afford to backslide when it comes to homelessness in California. Cities are on the frontlines of this crisis, and we need this investment to keep getting people off the streets and connecting them to care and housing.

How San Diego Embeds Equity in Every Decision
|
Ensuring equity isn’t about a single office or title—it’s about making lasting, systemic change. In a new essay for the San Diego Union-Tribune, I set the record straight on how my administration is embedding equity into every City policy, budget decision, and program.
Read more about the work we’ve done to make more equitable decisions at City Hall and uplift historically underserved communities here, and how that work will continue as we move forward.

GETTING IT DONE - FIXING OUR STREETS
|
Bay Park’s Milton Street Gets a Fresh, Long-Lasting Surface
|
City crews have completed permanent repairs on a section of Milton Street in Bay Park, transforming a severely deteriorated roadway with a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of 6.3 into a smooth, 100-rated surface.
Using data-driven assessments, our crews are targeting the most pothole-prone streets with these long-term fixes—ensuring fewer patch jobs and better roads for years to come. I know San Diegans are frustrated by the shape of our streets, especially as recent rain has made potholes even worse. We’re doing all we can to improve road conditions across the city.

Helping Service Members Build Their Futures
|
San Diego is a proud military town committed to ensuring veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses have access to meaningful careers. At the MCAS Miramar Career Summit, hosted by Hiring Our Heroes, I spoke about how partnerships, job placement programs, and initiatives like SkillBridge are creating real opportunities for our military community. Helping service members transition successfully is just one way we support those who serve.

Focusing on San Diego-Tijuana Ties
|
I recently met with Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño to discuss the deep and enduring relationship between our cities. We emphasized the importance of continued collaboration on the shared priorities of the communities we serve, including economic interconnectivity and public safety. Our region’s strength lies in our ability to work together, and I look forward to building on this partnership and advancing the initiatives that make our binational region thrive.
