One of my favorite quotes is, “Don’t tell me your priorities. Show me your budget— and I’ll tell you your priorities.”

In the current state budget, our caucus and our governor are fighting for record investments in school funding, SEPTA, raising wages, and accountability for how we spend your tax dollars. Below is a quick look at how I fought for some of those priorities in the last week of our budget hearings — and what’s ahead.

🌲$60k for Schuylkill Center

I was proud to join State Senator Vincent Hughes in presenting a $60,000 check to the Schuylkill Environmental Center to support upgrades to their ADA-compliant hiking trail.

Projects like these help ensure that everyone in our community, regardless of mobility, has the opportunity to connect with nature, stay active, and feel welcome outdoors.

🚲 Making Our Streets Safer

During budget hearings, I spoke with PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll about ways we can make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists across Pennsylvania.

I have two bills that would help ensure this. One would allow automated speed enforcement in more areas, preventing related accidents without pulling officers away from other priorities. My second bill, with Rep. Mary Jo Daley, would allow parking-protected bike lanes — a design that creates a safer barrier between cyclists and moving traffic.

Safer street design saves lives. These are common-sense tools that would make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

🚆 Public Transit Drives Our Economy

Public transportation is essential for workers, students, older adults, and businesses across Pennsylvania. It connects people to jobs, education, healthcare, and other opportunities.

In the PA House, we passed five bills over the last two years to provide sustainable funding for transit systems across the commonwealth. These investments help keep buses and trains running while supporting economic growth in communities both large and small.

💰 A Millionaires Tax

Like many of you, I believe everyone should contribute their fair share to support the services our community relies on.

My bill, HB 833, would ensure the state’s wealthiest residents were paying their fair share toward major investments like education, transportation, and public services.

During budget hearings, I asked the Department of Revenue about adopting a “millionaires tax,” similar to the one recently adopted in Massachusetts.

🧠 Supporting Families Facing Alzheimer's

Alzheimer’s is a difficult diagnosis that affects not just patients but entire families and caregivers. That’s why I worked with Rep. Maureen Madden to pass a new law creating Pennsylvania’s first Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and Related Disorders Office within the Department of Aging.

The office will help coordinate care, support caregivers, and connect families with the resources they need. If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia and need caregiving assistance, call 717-783-1550.

Supporting our Sisters and Immigrants

I stood with the Sisters of Saint Joseph and community members on Wednesday at a vigil outside the ICE office in Center City to support immigrants who have been detained and separated from their families.

We should not be tearing families and communities apart; we can enforce the law and keep our communities safe without creating fear or causing unnecessary harm.

That requires real accountability for ICE and a system that actually works. Right now, for too many immigrants and asylum seekers, the legal pathways that do exist are limited, backlogged, or out of reach. We need a more workable, humane approach that reflects our values and strengthens our communities.

💼 Help Us Raise the Wage

PA’s minimum wage is still one of the lowest in the country. I’m pushing to raise it to $15 and keep it in line with the cost of living. I’ve raised this in budget hearings because it’s a matter of fairness and a stronger economy.

Come out on Saturday for our annual pet event, featuring local pet-focused businesses selling pet portraits, treats, and more; information about dog licensing; and pet adoptions with ACCT. It’s a nice chance to get outside and meet neighbors.

Struggling with heating bills this winter? Stop by to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and get help covering your energy costs before the season ends.

Also, sign up by March 21 to secure an appointment at our March 31 LIHEAP Sign-Up Event. Walk-ins may be accepted if time allows, but registering in advance helps ensure you can meet with a specialist and complete your application before the program closes for the season.
