PATHWAYS FOR PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS
|
The City of San Diego, on occasion, receives generous offers from nonprofits and community groups to fund or build improvements to our public spaces. These offers may range from small quality-of-life improvements to larger community-led initiatives. Currently, there is no clear process to guide these partnerships. That is why I introduced a new Council Policy, which passed unanimously through Rules Committee, to create a clear and consistent process for nonprofits and community groups to work with the City.
This policy ensures they receive prompt assistance and clear guidance while empowering City departments to thoughtfully negotiate agreements. To ensure proposed projects align with the City’s priorities, each proposal will be carefully evaluated using criteria outlined in the draft policy. This means faster results, more community-driven improvements, and efficient use of private funding to enhance the public spaces we all share.

The iconic Crystal Pier is once again open to the public thanks to the collaborative and dedicated efforts of City staff, engineers, and Bill and Claudia Allen from the Crystal Pier Hotel. While the pier is open and structurally sound, work will continue to strengthen its resilience against rising tides and increasingly intense storms.

Economists agree: the City Council’s updated ADU program strikes the right balance, protecting neighborhoods and keeping ADUs as part of our region’s housing solution. The reality is, updating the program and closing loopholes is long overdue.
