UCSD Report: E-bike injuries increasing 'exponentially' as popularity grows

KPBS reports that while e-bikes are flying off the shelves, that spike has resulted in an “exponentially” growing increase in injuries, according to a report released last week by UC San Diego health researchers.

In case you missed it, my e-bike regulations were approved by City Council last month and will go into effect early next month. Here’s what a pediatric trauma surgeon at Rady Children’s Hospital who cares for injured children every week said about the regulations.

“I’ve seen how quickly e-bike crashes can change a family’s life. Setting a minimum age of 12 is a simple, practical safeguard that helps keep our youngest riders safe while still supporting active transportation for older youth. Children under 12 simply aren’t developmentally ready for the speed, weight, and split-second decisions e-bikes demand. This proposal for an age restriction gives families a clear standard, helps schools and community groups teach safety more effectively, and aligns San Diego with national trends toward responsible e-mobility.” - Dr. Romeo Ignacio Jr., MD, MS, Trauma Medical Director at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego.

Thanks to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, here’s a list of tips (ALWAYS wear a helmet, put your phone and headphones away, etc.) to prevent injuries from e-bike injuries.

LWSD Community Toolkit for CalFresh and Medi-Cal Changes

The Emilio Nares Foundation's Healing Through Nature program is a free family-centered outdoor wellness program for families whose child is a cancer survivor.

Through guided outdoor experiences, therapeutic nature-based activities, financial education, STEAM workshops and mindfulness practices, families have the opportunity to reconnect, reduce stress, and continue their healing journey together after cancer treatment. The program is offered in both English and Spanish, with live interpretation available.

The program is currently enrolling families for the summer cohort beginning August 15. Eligibility includes:

Families with a child ages 5–18 who is in remission from childhood cancer
Survivors at any stage after completing treatment, including long-term survivors
Families seeking emotional and mental health support as they navigate life after treatment
No income requirements
Free transportation, breakfast and lunch provided to avoid any barriers for participation
