REOPENING AFTER STORMS

I'm hopeful everyone is safe and recovering from the powerful storms that downed numerous trees and caused power outages across the region earlier this week. Presque Isle State Park reopened Friday morning, and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center is expected to reopen later today once power is restored.

Our district office in Millcreek is open and helping people this morning. If you have state-related issues, we are ready to assist you.

BILL PROMOTES TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY

My bill, which aims to increase transparency between law enforcement and the community by equipping county parole officers with body cameras, unanimously passed the House Judiciary Committee earlier this week. It now heads to the House floor for consideration.

This is all about promoting transparency and accountability. It's important that Pennsylvania law keeps pace with the tools necessary to support safety, transparency, and professionalism for everyone involved.

MY BILL CUTS TAXES FOR BREWERS

My Brews to Barns Act also advanced out of committee earlier this week. The bill would create a tax credit program for brewers who donate spent grain to PA farmers. Spent grain is the solid leftovers from brewing that are high in protein, fiber and minerals. It can be used as animal feed or compost, and this program would help keep it out of landfills.

Pennsylvania has a rich heritage in both brewing and agriculture, and this is an initiative that greatly benefits both. Incentivizing brewers to donate their spent grain supports small businesses and farmers and keeps waste out of our landfills. The bill passed after the Policy Committee traveled to the Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup this year to host a roundtable with brewers from Erie and around the state to hear their concerns.

ZOOS, ANIMALS VISIT CAPITOL

I visited with representatives from the Erie Zoo in the Capitol Complex Tuesday. Some of the biggest ambassadors from Pennsylvania zoos met with lawmakers to detail the conservation, education and community programs they provide. Erie Zoo was joined by representatives from the Philadelphia Zoo, Pittsburgh Zoo, Elwood Park Zoo in Norristown, National Aviary in Pittsburgh and the Lehigh Valley Zoo.

HONORING CADETS FOR EXCELLENCE

Congratulations to McDowell High School’s AFJROTC Unit PA-791st on earning the prestigious Distinguished Unit with Merit designation! The unit also received the Silver Star Community Service of Excellence Award—one of just 41 units worldwide, and the only one in Pennsylvania, to earn the honor.

My office was proud to present the cadets with a House proclamation recognizing their outstanding achievements, leadership, and commitment to serving our community.

Congratulations to the cadets, instructors, and families on this incredible accomplishment!

OFFICE INTERNS VISIT HARRISBURG

My Chief of Staff, P.J. Monella, and our district office summer interns, Claire from Millcreek Township and Ken from Fairview Township, spent time in Harrisburg this week getting a firsthand look at the Capitol during session.

Our Erie County team was recognized on the House floor, toured the Capitol complex, and had the opportunity to meet with the Speaker of the House, Rep. Joanna McClinton. It was a great experience for these future leaders to see state government in action.

HOW WE VOTED

The House is scheduled to vote on bills every week in June. The House passed a budget in April, but it continues to work with the Senate on negotiations.

The House passed numerous measures to help improve the lives of workers and working families this week. Among the bills we passed, the House voted to make health insurance more affordable (HB 2550); we passed a bill to cut property taxes for seniors by making big tech pay its fair share (HB 1678); we voted to help firefighters purchase equipment and make upgrades (HB 2446); we passed a measure to protect access to fertility treatments (HB 836); we voted to provide new charities with temporary tax relief (HB 2305); we voted to update lead blood testing requirements for children (HB 916); we passed the Golden Girls Law to help people find more affordable housing (HB 2109); we passed a bill to add protections to the nonconsensual sharing of real and/or AI-created intimate images (HB 2252); and we passed legislation to limit cancer-causing "forever chemicals" in certain products (HB 2145).

You can see how we voted on all bills here.

STATEWIDE WORK WITH POLICY COMMITTEE

As Chairman of the PA House Democratic Policy Committee and a member of the House Majority Leadership team, I travel across the state with the Policy Committee to hear from workers, seniors, advocates, business leaders, and officials on emerging issues and initiatives. We examine how policies are working for people across the state and identify opportunities to advance reforms that would help even more residents.

The committee has hosted 71 hearings with 49 hosts across 47 neighborhoods during this legislative session.

NEW LOCAL BUSINESS OPENS

My team was happy to join Jasmine Almeida and the entire Avanti’s family for their ribbon-cutting and grand reopening celebration last week.

It’s always great to see a local business begin a new chapter, especially one with such deep roots in the community. Small businesses like Avanti’s help make Erie special, and it’s wonderful to see local entrepreneurs investing in our neighborhoods and creating opportunities right here at home.

Congratulations to Jasmine on this exciting milestone. We wish her and the entire team continued success in the years ahead!
