Slower Speeds Can Mean Improved Safety
|
The City released its Comprehensive Speed Management Plan, a citywide, data-informed strategy to reduce vehicle speeds in areas allowed under state law and advance the City’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
It received unanimous support in the Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee last week and will be heard at City Council in March.
Speeding remains one of the leading factors in severe and fatal traffic collisions. The Plan used a data-driven, city-wide approach to lower speed limits across San Diego’s neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and school zones, with District 1 safety corridors designated in Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Carmel Valley, Del Mar Heights, Torrey Pines, and Pacific Highlands Ranch.

What to Know About 'Zone Zero'
|
State-Mandated ‘Zone Zero’ Requirements went into effect in San Diego on February 28, 2026 for new construction, while existing homes have until February 2027. Zone Zero is the area within five feet of a home or building, including outbuildings, attached decks, and stairs. Keeping this area clear of vegetation and other flammable materials helps prevent a wildfire from reaching the structure, especially from wind-driven embers.
Guidelines:
- Remove dead plants, dry or fallen leaves, pine needles, mulch, firewood, trash, debris, and other flammable materials within five feet of your home, including roofs and gutters, decks, porches, balconies, stairways, and any areas beneath the home.
- Use hardscape materials such as concrete, gravel, pavers, or bare soil.
- Trees are allowed in Zone Zero, if they are properly maintained and regularly pruned.
- Limit combustible items like outdoor furniture and planters on top of decks.
- Replace combustible fencing, gates, and arbors with noncombustible alternatives.
- Consider relocating garbage and recycling containers, boats, RVs, and vehicles outside of Zone Zero.
For more information, refer to Zone 0 Frequently Asked Questions from the State Board of Forestry & Fire Protection.

The Mayor launched a City Budget Survey to get your input helping shape the Proposed FY2027 Budget to be released on April 15. Your input can inform the tough budget decisions for the coming year. This feedback will help determine which programs and services are prioritized and which are reduced.
Facing a projected deficit of approximately $120 million for fiscal year 2027, the City is looking to draft a budget that takes resident priorities into account while also closing the deficit.
Residents who live within San Diego city limits are invited to take the five-minute survey at sandiego.gov/BudgetSurvey. Residents are also welcome to access public computers at any San Diego Public Library location. Signs will be posted in City libraries and recreation centers with a QR code linking to the online survey.

The City’s Utilities Undergrounding Program (UUP) works with San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and other utilities, as needed to move poles and utility lines underground. UUP facilitates the work and SGG&E executes the construction.
UUP issues a newsletter to keep communities updated on programs. The February 2026 issue includes updates on Carmel Valley, Crown Point, Del Mar Heights, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla. View the undergrounding status of your neighborhood.
