• Rules Committee Passes “First-in-the-State” Proposed Ordinance to Address Cryptocurrency ATM Scams

  • Council Unanimously Passes a Resolution to Combat Anti-Muslim Hate
  • El Camino Real to Via De La Valle Project Awarded
  • Happy Hispanic Heritage Month

Council President LaCava is joined by volunteers and representatives from the Senior Affairs Advisory Board and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to speak about his consumer protection ordinance.

City Council’s Rules Committee passed my state-leading consumer protection ordinance to address rising scams at Cryptocurrency ATMs. Nationwide, scams using cryptocurrency ATMs cost victims nearly $400 million a year.

Earlier this year, the Senior Affairs Advisory Board contacted my office, identifying a new generation of scams that rely on Cryptocurrency ATMs. Currently, San Diegans can convert their cash to cryptocurrency at more than 110 cryptocurrency ATMs across the City. Once the converted cash is sent, unlike traditional ATMs that record financial transactions, it is gone, almost impossible to trace, and nearly irrecoverable.

This ordinance will require warnings at every cryptocurrency ATM, better equipping businesses to intervene in the event of a scam, helping residents assess risk before succumbing to a scam, and guiding individuals to educational resources.

As scams evolve, our City will evolve to meet and address them, and partner with law enforcement and advocacy organizations to do our part to protect residents.

Council Unanimously Passes a Resolution to Combat Anti-Muslim Hate

Council President LaCava speaks to the media alongside members of the City Council, faith leaders, and civil rights advocates regarding the resolution to define Islamophobia that he and Councilmember Elo-Rivera brought forward to City Council.

City Council unanimously passed a resolution that I brought forward with Councilmember Elo-Rivera to define Islamophobia and combat anti-Muslim hate.

As the Muslim community recovers from the traumatic and tragic May 18 shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego which killed 3 guards and put 140 children in harm's way, our City must do more to address the hate that the community feels every day. Our City is united, resolved, and committed to work towards ensuring that every San Diegan is able to participate in public life, express their faith, and live without fear for their safety or discrimination, no matter their creed or background.

We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community to rise above hate.

El Camino Real to Via De La Valle Project Awarded

Council approved the construction contract to carry out the El Camino Real Bridge Replacement Project. The 84-year old El Camino Real bridge is structurally deficient and fails to reduce threats from high flood events.

The approved project:

  • implements the community plan;
  • improves access to the Coast to Crest trail;
  • doubles the number of lanes along this roadway;
  • improves traffic safety at the El Camino Real and Via de la Valle intersection; and
  • mitigates flood impacts and risk along this roadway

Construction is expected to break ground this year.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15 in recognition of the many independence celebrations of Latin American countries that occur over this period.

This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month Theme is “Unidos, Somos Más”/“Together, We Are More.” As a binational region, we live this theme. From our economy to our culture, our City is stronger and more vibrant thanks to its diverse Latino communities.

Team LaCava joins in the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month!
