Wednesday, Council held its third evening meeting for community input. This meeting was dedicated to the “May Revise,” a minor update to the April draft budget. On Friday, the Budget Review Committee (BRC) wrapped up its departmental hearings. Next Friday, June 5th, BRC will meet in Chambers at 9 a.m. for further public input and for an open discussion by councilmembers as to their individual priorities and possible budget modifications. June 9th is scheduled for City Council’s final deliberations and adoption, recognizing the City Charter requires the Council and Mayor to adopt a balanced budget by June 30.

I continue to fight for the District while remaining fiscally responsible. Funding for several key D1 priorities were added in the May Revise, including:

  • Full restoration of Carmel Valley Library Monday hours;
  • Restoration of La Jolla Recreation Center hours from full closure;
  • Restoration of Shoreline Park restrooms;
  • Funding the Speed Management Plan;
  • Support for brush management and fire prevention.

The budget is still a draft and now in the hands of the City Council, with many sensitive cuts still being debated for restoration. Many conversations remain before the final budget is adopted. Pacific Beach Business Roundtable

Small businesses are the engine of our local economy. I thank Sunny Lee, Executive Director of DiscoverPB, and the DiscoverPB staff for your partnership, advocacy, and work at the nexus between business, community, and the City. Thank you for inviting me to sit down with Pacific Beach business owners. Businesses are constituents, and we discussed the Small Business Enhancement Program, parking meters and community parking districts, code enforcement, and pedestrian safety. When the public and private sectors talk to each other with mutual respect and transparency, we break down silos and get things done.

Lifeguard Summer Kickoff

Following Memorial Day Weekend, San Diego’s beaches and bays fill with City residents and visitors alike. I joined the Fire-Rescue Department and community leaders for the annual San Diego Lifeguard Summer Kickoff on Thursday. This yearly event pulls the whole division together, welcomes back seasonals, recognizes promotions, and marks the transition into peak beach season. As a critical part of public safety in District 1, I thank our lifeguards for the heroic work they do to keep us safe at our beaches and bays. And I am grateful for the support they receive from the community.

New Signs Installed at La Jolla Cove to Promote Wildlife Safety and Protect Recreation

Mid-May marks the end of the seal pupping season at Children’s Pool and the beginning of sea lion pupping season at La Jolla Cove. Coinciding with peak season at the La Jolla Cove, sea lion pups are especially vulnerable due to the influx of visitors.

Follow these best practices:

  • Maintain a safe distance from sea lions and their pups (No selfies!).
  • Pay attention to sea lions as they can quickly turn if they feel there is a threat to their pups.
  • Follow the guidance offered by the City’s Park Rangers.

We can enjoy both safe viewing of sea lions and the recreational opportunities at the Cove.
