Welcome Steve Murray, new Commission member

Steve Murray, Army Veteran, was recently appointed as a new Commissioner to the Hamilton County Veteran Services Commission by the Court of Common Pleas.

He was sworn in at the Commission meeting on February 11 by Thomas Beridon, Court Administrator/Chief Magistrate. His appointment follows the resignation of long-time Commissioner Jerry Rowland.

“We are fortunate that Steve will assist us in our continued work to connect with the 37,000 veterans who live in Hamilton County,” said Glenn Welling, Executive Director. “He’s joining us at a great time in our Commission’s history, as we move into more accessible space at Hamilton County’s Central Campus in Bond Hill, with an increased focus on expanding and improving service to Veterans.”

Steve was commissioned as an officer in the Army after graduating from Xavier University. He spent nine years in active duty, serving in logistics and supply leadership roles. After an honorable discharge in 1991, he had a 29-year civilian career in business, including with Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Cinergy, Duke Energy, and ATR Distributing. Steve is also a member of the Xavier ROTC Hall of Fame.

A Cincinnati native and a graduate of Elder High School, Steve has been married to his wife, Nancy, for more than 40 years. They have five children.

Did you know?

Service Officers at the Hamilton County Veterans Service Commission who assist Veterans with claims, VA benefits, temporary financial assistance, and transportation services, are all Veterans! Ohio State law requires this under Ohio Revised Code (ORC 5901.) Each of Ohio's 88 counties have a Veterans Service Commission under this law. The law also allows for dependents of Veterans to fill positions if a qualified Veteran cannot be found.

VSO Calvin Wooten has retired

After more than a decade of service to Veterans with Hamilton County Veterans Service, Navy Veteran Calvin Wooten retired this month. We celebrated him with cake and a BBQ lunch. Thanks for your service, Calvin, and enjoy retirement!

Veterans connect with pizza and bowling

A good time was had by all at the Hamilton County Veterans Service Pizza and Bowling night on February 24. Western Bowl was the location for the food and fun with fellow Veterans.
This event was our small way of saying thank you to Veterans for their service as well as a way for fellow Veterans to connect with each other.
We want to thank Western Bowl for their hospitality! Next time you visit them, make sure to watch for our ad on the TV screens over the lanes.

What's happening in health?

We want to thank Local 12-WKRC for hosting the Veterans Health Expo at the Sharonville Convention Center. We connected with dozens of Veterans to share information about benefits, claims, transportation, temporary financial assistance, and more. Executive Director Glenn Welling, Commissioner Marie Reinert, and Financial Manager Jim Gronefeld participated in panel discussions led by Health Reporter Liz Bonis.

Connecting with Veterans throughout the County

In addition to the WKRC Veterans Health Expo, this month's outreach events included Xavier's Military Appreciation Basketball game on Valentine's Day and Justice Coordinator Ron Mitchell's presentations at VOA-Mt. Healthy, Ohio Valley Goodwill, and Shelter House.
