As your State Senator in the Maryland General Assembly, I have been closely monitoring the severe thunderstorms that caused significant damage throughout Legislative District 7 and surrounding communities in Baltimore and Harford Counties.

 

The storms brought down trees, power lines, and utility poles, resulting in road closures, widespread power outages, and disruptions to many Independence Day celebrations.

 

If your home sustained damage, I encourage you to contact your homeowner's insurance provider as soon as possible to determine whether your policy covers storm-related losses. In many cases, damage caused by severe weather may be covered under an "Act of God" provision.

This morning, I received an updated report on power restoration efforts throughout Legislative District 7.

 

Approximately 860 customers in the Baltimore County portion of the district and 790 customers in the Harford County portion are still awaiting restoration of power. Of the 1,654 customers currently without service, crews have already been assigned to approximately 1,100 outages, and the remaining 554 customers will be addressed as soon as possible.

 

Statewide, utilities estimate that 80% of remaining outages will be restored by 6:00 p.m. on July 6, with full restoration expected by 11:00 p.m. on July 7. Please note that these estimated restoration times are subject to change based on the extent of storm damage, any new outages, and extreme heat conditions. Your neighbors, lineworkers, and the many individuals working behind the scenes are doing everything they can to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.

Harford County Emergency Updates:

Harford County’s Department of Emergency Services oversees the coordination of resources and information during emergencies, covering the four phases of emergency management, such as mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. This system is designed to handle all hazards, including natural disasters, severe weather, man-made incidents, and civil emergencies.

With the potential for additional storms later this week, I wanted to share these important contact numbers for your convenience. Keeping them readily available may be helpful should you need to report an outage, downed wires, or other storm-related concerns.

Please Stay Safe!

  • Stay away from all downed wires and storm-damaged electrical equipment. Always assume downed wires are energized.
  • Report outages or downed wires to BGE at 877-778-2222 or visit BGE.com/outage.
  • You can also report outages through BGE’s mobile app, by texting 69243, or online at BGE.com.
  • If you smell natural gas or suspect a gas leak, leave the area immediately, move at least 100 feet away, and call 911 or BGE at 877-778-7798.

During extended outages, consider relocating safely if you have access to a location with power. Use candles, only under close supervision, to avoid a fire. Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances. Never run a generator inside your home, garage, or near air intakes.
