Around the Captiol

On Monday, my colleagues and I in the House voted to pass House Bill 280, which would allow open primaries in Pennsylvania elections. This legislation would allow voters registered as independent or unaffiliated to choose which party’s primary they wish to participate in on Election Day.

Independent and third-party voters now make up more than 16% of Pennsylvania’s registered voters, yet under the current system, they generally cannot participate in partisan primary elections when no third-party candidate is on the ballot. HB 280 would give these voters an opportunity to have their voices heard in the primary process.

The bill would not allow registered Democrats or Republicans to vote in the opposing party’s primary. Instead, it would provide independent and unaffiliated voters with the option to participate in either party’s primary while maintaining a record of their selection.

This is an important step toward strengthening Pennsylvania’s elections, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to support this legislation and give an equal opportunity to thousands of disenfranchised voters.

I’m proud to share that legislation I introduced and authored, House Bill 2645, passed the Pennsylvania House on a bipartisan basis!

Buying a home is one of the largest investments a person will make, and Pennsylvanians deserve peace of mind knowing their home inspector has the training and experience necessary to do the job properly.

HB 2645 would strengthen licensing requirements for home inspectors by requiring:

• 80 hours of commission-approved education

• Registration as a home inspector-in-training

• At least 50 mentored home inspections

• A commission-approved licensing examination

I am now calling on my colleagues in the Senate to pass this legislation and send it to the Governor’s desk.

Additionally, HB2398, which I also introduced, passed the House on Wednesday.

My bill would require organized camps located within 500 feet of a special flood hazard area to develop and maintain written flood evacuation plans, submit them to local emergency management officials, review them annually, and clearly communicate evacuation routes and safe locations to campers and families.

This legislation is a result of by the tragic Camp Mystic flooding in Texas, which claimed 28 lives, including 25 campers, two counselors, and the director. By strengthening preparedness and evacuation planning, we can help prevent a similar tragedy from happening here in Pennsylvania.

I’m grateful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for supporting this common-sense measure.

I am calling on my colleagues in the Senate to pass this legislation and send it to the Governor’s desk.

HVAC Lab Groundbreaking

Recently, I was thrilled to attend the groundbreaking for the new HVAC Lab at Bucks County Community College’s Lower Bucks Campus right here in Bristol.

This is such an important investment in trades--our communities need skilled workers, and students should have access to quality education and hands-on training that can lead to rewarding, good-paying careers.

I will always support investments that strengthen our trades and create new opportunities for the next generation of workers.

Flood Gate Ribbon-Cutting

I also joined Sen. Steve Santarsiero to see the new flood gates on Green Lane, which will prevent vehicles from entering the underpass during flash flooding and help keep drivers and first responders safe.

I’m also proud to announce state funding for a storm pipe replacement project along the Green Lane corridor, from Bristol Pike to Radcliffe Street. Together, these investments will improve roadway safety and help protect hundreds of nearby homes, businesses and institutions.

Flooding is an ongoing challenge in our communities, and investing in prevention now is critical to keep residents safe before the next major storm. I will always advocate for funding that helps keep our communities and our drivers safe.

A Successful Bristol Fall Fest

It was great to be part of Bristol Fall Fest! The event brought together neighbors, local families, and community organizations for a wonderful day celebrating all that makes Bristol such a special place to live.

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make the event such a success!

Bristol Township Senior Center Senior Expo

Last week, my staff and I attended the Bristol Township Senior Center’s Senior Expo!

Thank you so much to the Senior Center for all the amazing work they do for our community. They did a fantastic job organizing this event, and my staff and I were happy to attend and participate!

Notice of Upcoming Medicaid Changes

Changes to Medicaid, also known as Medical Assistance in Pennsylvania, are coming on January 1, 2027, because of changes to federal law. More information is expected to be released, but here is what you need to know for now:

  • Some adults will need to renew their Medicaid Plan every six months instead of annually.
  • A new requirement means some adults enrolled in Medicaid will need to participate in work, school, job training, volunteering, or other community activities.

If you receive Medicaid, now is a good time to make sure your mailing address and contact information are up to date with DHS so you don't miss important notices about these changes.
