Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth commemorates the final order given to emancipate 250,000 enslaved people in Texas in 1865, more than two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Often called America’s “Second Independence Day,” Juneteenth is a reminder to celebrate our nation’s ideals of freedom, equality, and justice while also acknowledging that it is incumbent upon us to ensure that we make these ideals real for all people.

Public Utility Affordability

San Diegans are saddled with soaring energy costs and pay some of the highest rates in California.

I joined Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, community and business leaders, and several organizations to call on the City Council to vote in favor of the councilmember’s resolution to support a slate of bills before the state legislature — bills that will hold investor-owned public utilities accountable and make energy more affordable. I am grateful to my colleagues for their unanimous approval, sending a unified voice to State Legislators, the CPUC, and investor-owned public utilities, asserting that San Diego’s ratepayers have had enough. San Diego families deserve transparency and cleaner, greener, and cheaper energy, and I will continue advocating on behalf of San Diegans.

California Coastal Commission Approves City Coastal Parking Revisions

Public Parking Lot Sites with Revised or Expanded Nighttime Closure Hours

The Coastal Commission approved the City of San Diego’s request to revise or expand nightly vehicle closure hours and gates in 35 coastal public parking lots from the Gliderport to Mission Bay to Sunset Cliffs.

This multi-year effort was taken in response to late-night disturbances, overnight parking, and criminal activity occurring at some locations and as a preventive measure in others. The closure hours were limited to the minimum necessary to address demonstrated safety problems.
