E-bike regulations: here’s what happens next

My e-bike regulations were approved in their second reading at City Council this week, which means that they go into effect 30 days from Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know.

The e-bike regulations, in addition to other current regulations, such as those that prohibit e-motorcycles and prohibit children under 16 from riding class 3 e-bikes:

Prohibit e-bike use for children under the age of 12

Prohibit piggybacking on e-bikes without a designated seat for a second rider

Before SDPD and rangers are allowed to issue citations, the City of San Diego must conduct a 60-day outreach campaign to make the community aware of the new regulations, promote safe riding habits, and encourage education and prevention over future infractions.

I will work closely with SDPD, schools, mobility groups, community leaders, and non-profit organizations to ensure a comprehensive rollout to achieve the number one goal of this policy: keep the community safe.

Beat the heat this weekend

A heatwave is on its way to San Diego, and you can stay cool by visiting the City of San Diego’s designated cool zones.

City of San Diego libraries and select recreation centers serve as designated cool zones with the additional benefit of free Wi-Fi. To view the list of locations, hours, and to find their phone numbers, visit this website.

You can also check the County of San Diego’s cool zones website, which lists additional locations throughout the County for you to beat the heat.

Speaking of heat, fire preparedness is everyone’s responsibility

Fire preparedness is a year-round endeavor in San Diego. Fire safety and prevention are some of the most frequent issues I hear from you about in my community meetings and town halls. It’s important to you and it is important to me, too.

Our understanding of fire safety and best practices has evolved with new research in fire science, and San Diego’s Fire Rescue team is at the front of this research. Next week, I’ll be meeting with SDPD and filming some videos on their best practices for fire preparedness, prevention, and safety.

CPPS and ACCF Funding Program applications are open

This week, the applications for the City of San Diego’s Community Projects, Programs, and Services (CPPS) and Arts, Culture, and Community Festivals opened. There are $900,000 and $450,000 available respectively in each program, or $150,000 per Council office that us Councilmembers choose to delegate. The application closes on Friday, August 7. I’ve proudly delegated funds to District 7 festivals, such as the Linda Vista Multicultural Fair, to critical community services like meals for hospitalized patients from Mama’s Kitchen, to hosting a senior resources fair by Tierrasanta Village. I look forward to another round of supporting important initiatives and beloved events!

Off the dais: Dune Part Three trailer

If you attended my recent Coffee with Campillo, you might have caught my Dune reference. Yes, our office is a Dune office. Most of my staff have read several books of the series. I’m personally on the fifth book. We are all fans of Denis Villeneuve’s astounding, epic movies.

This week, another official trailer dropped for Dune: Part Three, the final installment of the trilogy. And yes, it looks as good as all of us were hoping for.
