Dear Neighbors,
The Premier League (home to Manchester United, Liverpool and other top soccer/football clubs in the world) is coming to Chicago for their Mornings Live Fan Fest on September 21 & 22. On top of that, our own Lincoln Park was chosen over downtown venues to host this family-friendly international event. The Fan Fest, which recently visited Philadelphia (video below) will include broadcasts of live Premier League matches as they occur in England, celebrity/athlete meet & greets, merchandise giveaways, Nike training areas, the Premier League Trophy, and more! Please register at this link soon, as tickets opened this morning and will go fast.

As your alderman, it will be a proud moment when football fans around the world tune-in to watch games being played in England, and have their television broadcast pan to the Fan Fest’s views of our beautiful lakefront community. In partnership with the Chicago Park District & NBC, the Fan Fest will occur in Lincoln Park south of South Pond and west of North Avenue Beach/DLSD. As the event approaches, we will update you on logistics and our strict set-up/clean-up schedule.
On Sunday night, Verzênay Chicago (a favorite local bakery) was robbed of several hundred dollars from their cash register. The police are currently investigating and have video footage of the perpetrator wearing a mask at the time of the burglary. As discussed on our recent Ward Safety Walk on Lincoln Avenue, police and detectives are working to stop the trend of business robberies on commercial corridors. We have written about our strong feelings for Chef Arshiya’s amazing croissants and quiche before, and hope you will support Verzênay in this difficult time.
As the school year approaches, you may have noticed several new “bump-outs”, or curb extensions, being installed around the Ward (specifically at LaSalle Language Academy, Oscar Mayer Elementary and Bauler Park). As one neighbor asked, “what are those new bumpers on some street corners? What are they all about?” We are glad you asked.
|
Bump-outs are a pedestrian safety amenity that our office funds through the Aldermanic menu budget. We funded these particular bump-outs in response to CDOT traffic studies which were requested by schools and neighbors near the sites. As described at this link, bump-outs make streets narrower to slow down drivers, increase the sight-lines of drivers, encourage reduced speeds at intersections, and often bump stop signs out into better view. City-wide, bump-outs have proven to be effective while accommodating on-street parking. For aesthetics, we fund our bump-outs to include brick pavers (as opposed to solid concrete).
Finally, the DNC is almost here in Chicago (and below in this newsletter we include several informative links on the topic). After a year of preparation with a host of national organizations and local public safety officials, the Host Committee is publicizing changes to traffic patterns. We have previously written about the street closures near the United Center, which you can revisit here. Additionally, this week, the CTA released bus reroutes for the United Center and McCormick Place. These reroutes don’t impact our Ward directly; however, encourage you to brush up on these changes in case you are joining in the festivities across the city. Take a look below for these reroutes.
Sincerely,
Ald. Timmy Knudsen
P.S. As a project of Gertie, a Chicago civic and cultural agency, CTA train lines have received fresh artwork ahead of next week’s DNC. As featured by the New York Times, the project will feature local artists’ work that highlights Chicago’s diverse cultural backgrounds, with an emphasis on “small d” democratic themes. This project is named “Track(ed) Changes” and is being coupled with community events throughout the city to help shed light on the rich and vibrant neighborhoods throughout our City.

P.S.S. If you have a Block Party coming up, you can reserve your “no parking” signs by replying to this email or emailing alik@ward43.org. Our office will have the signs written out and ready for you to pick up in advance of your party date!

DNC 2024 Public Safety Updates
|
As you know, the Democratic National Convention is taking place next month from August 19th-22nd. We want to ensure that you and your constituents have the most up-to-date information regarding this event. Kindly see the DNC toolkit at this link, or attached QR code.
500 additional police officers from across Illinois, will assist CPD during the convention. The addition of these officers will help continue to have CPD officers in our neighborhoods during these days.
This toolkit contains perimeter maps, ways to stay informed, and a link to the OEMC website, which contains additional information including a FAQ regarding the DNC. We also encourage you to download the OEMC app as another source of information. The OEMC app can be downloaded from both the Apple and Google Play stores.

Lakeview Township Reassessment Information
|
A Message Related to Cook County’s Recent Property Re-Assessments: Recently, the Cook County Assessor’s Office re-assessed properties in the City of Chicago. When a property is reassessed, the property owner is mailed a Reassessment Notice. The Reassessment Notice reflects the estimated Fair Market Value based on sales of similar properties. The notice also contains important information such as the property’s characteristics, neighborhood code, and past assessments. An increase in a property’s assessment does not cause the same increase in the property owner’s taxes. Learn more about a reassessment notice vs property tax bill.
|
Property owners are given an opportunity to appeal their assessment if the property characteristics listed on an assessment notice are incorrect, or if the estimated market value of a property is significantly more than what it could sell for in the current real estate market. Learn about assessment appeals here.
As this is a county process (and not one that our Aldermanic office has any say on), if you have any further questions, please reach out to your Cook County Commissioner's office. Most of the 43rd Ward is represented by Bridget Degnen in the 12th District, but a few blocks are in the 10th (Bridget Gainer) or 3rd (Bill Lowry). If you are unsure, enter your address here.

As our city government and safety leadership transition into the next Administration, crime, and safety remain top of mind for our community. Each week, the 18th and 19th District post Compstat numbers that reflect changes in indexes for key crimes. In an effort to keep residents informed on these trends, we will publish those weekly updates in the newsletter’s public safety section. As a reminder, these statistics represent 100% of the 18th and 19th Police Districts; accordingly, they represent an area much larger than our ward.

We work closely with the 43rd Ward’s local CAPS districts, which include the 18th (Near North) and 19th (Town Hall) Police Districts.
Our office is in frequent contact with officers from both of these districts and their local CAPS officers, who host a variety of community forums and events including beat meetings, informational settings, and expert panel discussions, as well as sending out community alerts when a pattern of crime is detected.
Beat Meetings are part of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy and an excellent way to hear directly from CPD about your neighborhood. Meetings are held in the evenings every two months. Click here and find out your Police District and Beat number.

Parking Enforcement via 311

The Department of Finance (DOF) announced that City residents now have the option of reporting the following parking enforcement violations on the 311 app or online:
- Bus Lane Parking
- Commercial Loading Zone
- Commercial Vehicle Parked on a Residential Street
- Disabled Parking
- Fire Hydrant Parking
- Residential Parking
- Rush Hour Zones
- School Safety Zones
- Vehicle Parked in Bike Lane
- Other (Semi-trucks parked on streets, etc.)
Where previously only bike lane violations could be reported on 311, the DOF has now expanded the ability to report parking violations, to drive more community-based enforcement.
Neighbors can report parking violations by calling 311, using the CHI311 app, or through the 311 website. The request type is “Finance Parking Code Enforcement Review.”

Have questions about street work happening in your area? The Department of Transportation has a wonderful tool to look up street work in your area called the Chi Street Work Portal. Here you can input an address and see all surrounding permits for projects on that street.
|
I want to keep spreading the good word of how powerful a tool CHI 311 is to address non-emergency services in our Ward. Via the CHI 311 website and mobile app, you can:
- Create new service requests and check the status of existing requests (such as on timing and completion).
- Snap a photo of an issue to submit it with a request to improve location accuracy.
- Get local and relevant information/tips regarding the 43rd Ward including visibility into what other requests are being made in your neighborhood. The free CHI 311 mobile app is available for both iOS and Android devices and may be downloaded in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
