Dear Inquirer,

Public safety is one of the most basic responsibilities we have in state government. Families deserve to feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods. That means making sure our laws keep up with the real challenges people are facing today.

House Republicans are focused on giving you that peace of mind.

We recently took action on an issue that has gone unaddressed for far too long. Right now, under Michigan law, drug dealers can be held accountable if the drugs they sell result in someone’s death. But if a victim survives with devastating, life-altering injuries, there’s no penalty.

That doesn’t make sense.

I passed legislation to fix that gap by creating a new felony for delivering dangerous drugs that cause serious injury. If someone is permanently harmed or suffers major impairment because of drugs sold to them, there should be real consequences for the person responsible.

I believe in accountability. That’s why I’m putting a stop to the real damage being done in our communities and making sure our laws reflect reality.

We’re also taking strong steps to address new threats. One of those is kratom, a substance known as ‘gas station heroin’ that is raising serious concerns due to its harmful effects and total lack of oversight.

This is a dangerous substance that works like heroin and other opioids on your brain, but it is being marketed to kids at gas stations and corner stores.

Our plan takes kratom off the shelves by banning the manufacturing and sale of kratom and its synthetic variants in Michigan. It also establishes clear penalties and puts safeguards in place, especially when it comes to protecting minors. We want to get ahead of a growing problem before it becomes something even more dangerous for families and communities.

At the end of the day, these efforts are about common sense.

We’re focused on making sure the law protects people, supports law enforcement, and holds drug dealers accountable. We are listening to parents and local police and fixing problems. We will continue strengthening our laws and making sure Michigan is a place where people feel safe and secure.

That’s what you sent us here to do.

Sincerely,

Matt Hall

Speaker of the House
