Get Involved in the Interim Process
|
Interim meetings resumed last month, and I welcomed the opportunity to get back to the Capitol to continue working to study, debate, and craft policies that will benefit our community and state. Interim allows us to hear directly from industry experts and the public alike. Hearing your voices, your concerns, and your ideas on the issues that matter most is exactly what keeps our legislative process grounded and effective, and I look forward to keeping that open dialogue going throughout the rest of the year.
During our meetings last month, I made a motion that was approved to add data centers and Public Infrastructure Districts to our interim study list. Both issues have generated significant discussion as Utah continues to grow. Over the coming months, we will take a closer look at the opportunities and challenges associated with these developments, hear from stakeholders and local communities, and consider what reasonable guardrails may be needed. The goal is to provide greater clarity and ensure that we are prepared to address these important issues thoughtfully during the upcoming legislative session. I look forward to sharing the results of that work with you.
Our next interim meetings will take place on June 16th and 17th at the Capitol. I would love to see you there in person, or you can watch recordings, participate in livestreams, view agendas, and more at le.utah.gov.

Honoring Those Who Serve Us
|
Firefighters face significant cancer risks because of repeated exposure to smoke, chemicals, and toxic materials over the course of their careers.
Utah has made important progress in recent years, including the creation of a nationally recognized firefighter cancer screening program, which I was proud to co-sponsor.
But screening alone is not enough. When a firefighter receives a cancer diagnosis, treatment should not be delayed while a workers’ compensation claim works its way through the system.
That is why I sponsored HB416 this past session to create a firefighter cancer treatment trust fund. The purpose is straightforward: make sure firefighters can access benefits when they need them, without unnecessary delays.
I’m continuing to work closely with firefighters as we implement the program and make it one of the best in the country.
This is a practical step that will make a real difference for firefighters and their families during an incredibly difficult time. Learn more here.

Stewardship of our Resources
|
Governor Cox has issued a Drought Executive Order declaring a statewide state of emergency due to our drought conditions. Our mountain snowpack serves as Utah's primary water supply, and with our reservoirs drawing down quickly, aggressive water conservation is absolutely critical for all of us this season. Because our landscapes are incredibly dry, this drought also brings a significantly heightened risk of wildfires. This summer, while you’re enjoying all the beauty our state has to offer, please practice extra caution and use our fire sense whenever spending time outdoors. Let’s do our part to conserve water, prevent human-caused wildfires, and protect our communities.

Protecting Our Kids Online
|
Every parent has seen it. Kids spending hours scrolling. Algorithms pushing harmful content. Social media companies competing for attention at the expense of children’s mental health.
That’s why I’ve helped lead Utah’s fight to protect kids online.
I sponsored legislation to ban addictive features targeting minors, require parental consent for youth accounts, restrict data collection on kids, and give parents more visibility and control.
We took on Big Tech before most states were even paying attention. Now the rest of the country is following Utah’s lead.
I strongly believe kids deserve to grow up with real friendships, real experiences, and real childhoods, not trapped behind screens controlled by algorithms designed to keep them addicted.

Number One in Family Structure Index
|
Utah’s continued prosperity is rooted in the strength of our homes, and that was proven in a new national report that ranks Utah #1 in the family structure index. This ranking reflects our state’s high marriage rates and the fact that more of our children are raised in stable, two-parent households than anywhere else in the country. Our commitment to family values has led to tangible results: Utah currently holds the lowest childhood poverty rate in the nation and the lowest reliance on public assistance. When we prioritize the family unit, we see a direct correlation with our #1 rankings in volunteerism, charitable giving, and overall economic outlook. For the fourth year in a row, Utah has been named the best state in the nation, proving that strong families are not just a social priority—they are the primary engine behind the greatest success story in the American experiment.

Supporting Public Education.
|
Utah’s public education system is stronger today because we’ve made it a priority to invest in students, support teachers, and focus on real results.
Since taking office, I’ve voted to increase education funding by nearly $2 billion, while also working to ensure those dollars actually make it into classrooms and benefit students directly.
We’ve significantly increased starting teacher pay, expanded support for classroom supplies and professional development, and invested in recruiting the next generation of educators.
I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, but there’s still more work to do. Utah’s future depends on the success of the students sitting in our classrooms today. Learn more here.

Securing our Energy Future
|
One of my top priorities for our state is ensuring we have secure, reliable, and affordable baseload power that is always available when our families and businesses need it. In Utah, we embrace an “all-of-the-above” approach to energy that allows us to utilize every resource at our disposal to keep our power affordable and independent. In a major step forward for this vision, Utah has teamed up with Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico to launch the Mountain West Geothermal Consortium. Geothermal energy is a crucial piece of this puzzle because it provides a continuous, 24/7 supply of electricity that doesn't rely on the weather. We are uniquely positioned to lead this industry because high-quality heat is closer to the surface here, and experts are already calling Utah the heart of this geothermal renaissance. By streamlining permitting and cutting through bureaucratic red tape, this consortium will help expand our domestic energy portfolio and ensure Utah remains a powerhouse of innovation and grid reliability.

Future Leaders at the Capitol
|
One of my favorite things I get to do is welcome students to the Capitol.
I had the chance to join the 4th grade students from Elk Meadows Elementary for a tour of our beautiful Capitol building. I always love seeing their reactions when they walk in and look around, and I especially enjoy answering their questions, which are usually thoughtful, honest, and sometimes pretty funny.
Thanks to Elk Meadows for spending part of the day at the Capitol. It was great to have you here!

Most Effective Legislator
|
It’s easy to make noise in politics. It’s much harder to actually make progress.
I’ve never been interested in being the loudest voice in the room or chasing social media headlines. I believe our community deserves a Representative who is in the room, doing the hard, technical work required to turn your concerns into signed law.
Last month, the Center for Effective Lawmaking, a joint project of Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia, released its latest rankings. I was honored to be ranked the second-most effective legislator in the Utah House of Representatives for the most recent legislative session, and the most effective House member in Utah over the past four years.
What I appreciate about these rankings is that they are not a popularity contest. They don’t measure media attention or partisan scorecards. They measure one thing: results.
Their methodology even adjusts for leadership positions and committee assignments, meaning the rankings are intended to measure actual effectiveness, not just titles.
Being effective means I can take on difficult issues: transportation, affordability, public safety, education, protecting kids online, etc. and actually bring solutions across the finish line. Over the last several sessions, that work has helped deliver.
Utah is consistently ranked as one of the best-run states in America because we focus on outcomes, not just rhetoric. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust the people of South Jordan and West Jordan have placed in me to do this work.

Join the Celebration: America 250
|
The wait is over! Utah’s new America 250 license plate is officially available. I serve as one of the three members of Utah’s License Plate Design Review Board, and I was glad to help move this plate through the process of design and approval. The 13-star flag, the “1776,” and the clean, classic look make this a great way to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding.
You can order yours online at:
Once you are logged in, click “Change My Plate” and select the America 250 design. There is a one-time $16.50 fee to switch your plate, which covers the cost of the new plate and postage. There is no additional annual fee for this design.
We have also been working hard over the past year to redesign Utah’s special group license plates. The updated designs will be available to order on July 1, and I am excited for people to see them. As they are announced, I’ll share some of my favorites. There are some really cool plates coming.
As we gear up for America’s 250th anniversary, I find myself reflecting more than ever on the incredible legacy of freedom, ingenuity, and community that defines our nation. This milestone isn't just about looking back at our history. It’s about coming together as neighbors to shape the next chapter of our story. There are some fantastic celebrations and community events being planned right here in our area, and I’d love for you and your family to be a part of them. Check out Utah America 250 website to find upcoming events, get involved, and join in as we honor this incredible milestone together!
