Dear Neighbor,

This Thursday at 3:00 pm, I will deliver my 2026 State of the City Address., and I invite you to watch it live online.

This address is an opportunity to take stock of where San Diego is headed and to be clear-eyed about the work ahead.

This State of the City will lay out where we are seeing results, where we need to move faster, and how we will continue delivering for San Diegans.

CityTV can also be viewed within San Diego city limits on Cox Channel 24, Spectrum Channel 24, and AT&T Channel 99. The timing of the address is subject to City Council confirmation at its Jan. 13 meeting.

I hope you will join me online as we look ahead and continue the work of building a San Diego that works for all of us.

As always, it’s an honor to serve as your Mayor.

Real-Time Operations Center Strengthens Public Safety Citywide

San Diego continues to modernize public safety with the San Diego Police Department’s new Real-Time Operations Center, a centralized hub that brings together technology, data, and personnel to support officers with real-time information during critical incidents and major events.

Operational since April 2025, the center is already helping solve cases more efficiently and maximize limited resources through smart use of technology. Made possible in part through support from the San Diego Police Foundation and community donors, this investment reflects our focus on innovation, officer safety, and keeping San Diego one of the safest big cities in America.

Community Investment Strengthens Rose Canyon Safe Parking Program

The Rose Canyon Safe Parking Program continues to deliver results for families working to exit homelessness, and recent improvements to the site’s common space are strengthening that impact.

Operated by Jewish Family Service of San Diego, the program has helped families move from vehicle living into more secure housing since opening in 2023, providing a safe, stable place to sleep while connecting participants to housing-focused support.

New upgrades to the common area—including appliances, furnishings, electrical improvements, and welcoming design elements—were made possible through generous community support from Hanna and Mark Gleiberman and partners such as HomeAid San Diego, Humble Design San Diego, and Swinerton.

These improvements enhance dignity and create a functional space for meetings, support services, and community connection, reinforcing our partnership with Jewish Family Service to ensure families have both safety and a real pathway forward into stable housing.

San Diego Leads on Housing Production

New analysis by the California Department of Finance shows San Diego is growing faster than nearly every other major California metro, driven by policies that make it easier to build housing in the urban core.

The analysis finds that, “Few cities in California have been as aggressive in attacking the state’s crisis of housing supply and affordability as San Diego.” That approach is helping reverse pandemic-era population losses while early data show rents and home prices beginning to trend downward. Read the Times of San Diego op-ed.

One example of that progress is Bridge to Home, the City’s gap financing that closes critical funding gaps, allowing stalled housing projects to move forward and deliver homes faster. Bridge to Home has helped create more than 2,100 affordable homes across 23 developments citywide, connecting residents to housing near transit, jobs, and schools — and to services that help stabilize families and reduce homelessness. Read the San Diego Union-Tribune story on Bridge to Home.

🏛 Mayor’s Mix: My First State of the City 🏛️

In our last trivia feature, we askedWhich San Diego neighborhood was originally developed as a streetcar suburb and is now known for its historic Craftsman homes and vibrant business district?

Here’s how you voted:

✅ North Park — 58.13% (118)
▪️ Ocean Beach — 3.45% (7)
▪️ University Heights — 38.42% (78)

The correct answer is North Park — a neighborhood that grew up around early streetcar lines and today is celebrated for its classic Craftsman architecture and bustling local shops and restaurants. University Heights does have Craftsman homes and was influenced by early transit, which is why a lot of people chose it. The key difference is how the neighborhood is historically defined. North Park is widely documented as one of San Diego’s classic “streetcar suburbs.”

This week’s question: In my first-ever State of the City address, which I delivered virtually in 2021 from the San Ysidro library, I made clear that San Diego could not move forward without tackling one issue head-on. Which challenge did I identify as central to the city’s recovery and long-term success?

▪️ Creating a new citywide marketing slogan
▪️ Launching a City cryptocurrency or digital token
▪️ Reducing homelessness and expanding housing options

Answer below or send your guess to AskTheMayor@sandiego.gov — and check back next week to see if you got it right!

GETTING IT DONE - FIXING OUR STREETS

Slurry Seal Work Resumes Across Lincoln Park and Southeastern San Diego

With the return of dry weather, slurry seal crews are back at work resurfacing streets in Lincoln Park and neighborhoods including Otay Mesa, Skyline, Paradise Hills, and Encanto as part of Slurry Seal Project 2621. This preventative maintenance slows street deterioration, improves safety, and helps extend the life of our roads—reducing the need for more costly repairs and reconstruction down the line.

MAYOR GLORIA AROUND TOWN

Strengthening San Diego’s Life Sciences Partnership

I met with leaders from Biocom California to discuss how the City is supporting San Diego’s world-class biotech and life sciences sector. We talked about public safety, housing for our workforce, infrastructure, and the importance of being a reliable partner to innovators who are driving growth, jobs, and global impact across our region.

Connecting With Electrical Contractors at the NECA San Diego Gala

The National Electrical Contractors Association San Diego Chapter marked decades of industry leadership at its annual gala. It was great to connect with local contractors and recognize milestones for NECA San Diego, newly installed board leadership, and long-standing member companies that continue to help power our city’s homes, businesses, and major infrastructure projects.

Standing With Somali Childcare Providers

Recent hateful rhetoric and attacks targeting Somali people have caused fear and uncertainty across the country. I met with Somali childcare providers in San Diego to hear directly from the community and to make clear that the City stands with them. Thank you to Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA) for convening the conversation, Scott Wahl, and Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera for their leadership. San Diego sees you, honors you, and stands with you.

Supporting Binational Care for LGBTQIA+ Asylum Seekers

Lucero Maganda, Deputy Director of Community Engagement in my office, joined a gathering with Colectivo Viva Vivo Binacional, a San Diego–based organization working with shelters in Tijuana to support LGBTQIA+ and Trans asylum seekers living with HIV. Their binational work helps deliver care, dignity, and stability to people navigating extraordinary challenges.

SAN DIEGO ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

European Exchange Highlights San Diego’s Clean Energy Leadership

My team recently engaged with energy leaders from across Europe as part of a U.S. Department of State exchange program, facilitated by the San Diego Diplomacy Council. San Diego is a global leader in clean energy, and these conversations highlight the value of sharing ideas that drive innovation, strengthen our economy, and support energy resilience. Building these international connections benefits our City and reinforces San Diego’s leadership in the world.
