CRISSCROSSING PENNSYLVANIA
|
This week, the committee traveled to three events in three counties, visiting Philadelphia, Northampton and Bucks counties. The committee has held 84 hearings across 53 neighborhoods so far this legislative session, with 55 different leaders hosting events.
The committee visited Fox Chase Cancer Center in North Philadelphia for a roundtable and tour focused on the critical connection between cancer research and patient care. Fox Chase is at the forefront of cancer research and treatment. Its history includes major discoveries that have helped transform how cancer is understood and treated. The visit was also an opportunity to discuss the challenges facing patients today, including rising healthcare costs and access to care due in large part to federal funding cuts. Read more here.
On Tuesday, the committee traveled to Easton for a data-driven hearing on the state of PA’s Latino community. Pennsylvania’s Latino community powers our economy, strengthens our workforce, and enriches our communities, but testifiers detailed for Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz and the PA Legislative Latino Caucus how income inequality, lack of bilingual educators and staff, and a home ownership rate that lags below the state median are all causes for action and concern. On Wednesday, the committee traveled to Morrisville in Bucks County for a roundtable on the issues with chronically underfunded schools and the state’s ability to finally increase funding for financially struggling districts. Rep. Jim Prokopiak brought the committee here today to talk about the difference the state budget has made. Prokopiak championed more than $3.5 million for Morrisville School District, a permanent increase that will move the district toward greater financial stability and give students the resources they need. The House will return to Harrisburg to vote during session on Monday. We will also reconvene in Harrisburg the following week, starting Monday, Oct. 5. You can see how the House voted on every bill here.

On the third Thursday of each month, my team and I are proud to host a Veterans Service Officer from the VFW to be available to members of our community.
