Dear Inquirer,
Next week on July 1, one of San Diego's most beloved and famous attractions will celebrate its 100 year anniversary! Belmont Park is an iconic historic landmark in our city, attracting three million visitors annually to enjoy its exciting entertainment, prime location on the shores of Mission Beach, and all the surrounding shops and activities. Belmont Park was originally founded in 1925 by sugar magnate John D. Spreckels and was originally called the Mission Beach Entertainment Center before being formally renamed Belmont Park in 1955.
Belmont Park's landmark fixture, The Giant Dipper, is the fifth oldest roller coaster in the country and the oldest roller coaster in Southern California. A community grassroots effort called "Save the Coaster Committee" led to its recognition as a National Landmark in 1987.
In honor of their centennial anniversary, the City Council proclaimed July 1, 2025 to be "Belmont Park 100th Anniversary Day" in the City of San Diego. From May 26 until September 2, Belmont Park is celebrating their anniversary with "100 Days of Belmont" featuring giveaways, special deals, and lots of fun activities and events at the surrounding businesses that everyone can enjoy. Belmont Park is a vibrant part of District 2 and I am honored to call them a part of my District. Congratulations to Belmont Park on reaching this incredible milestone, and may there be many more to come!

Accessory Dwelling Unit and Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit Regulation Amendments to the San Diego Municipal Code
On June 16, the City Council approved 25 reforms to the City's Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) programs. Many of these amendments bring San Diego back in line with state laws related to the construction of ADUs. Some of the amendments are:
- Requiring minimum side and rear setbacks.
- No ADUs in very high or high fire risk areas.
- Limiting the number of ADUs that can be built based on the square footage of a lot.
- Requiring off-street parking to be included for bonus ADUs outside Transit Priority Areas.
Allocation of SeaWorld Settlement Funds to Projects Within Mission Bay Park
On June 24, the City Council approved the legal settlement reached between SeaWorld and the City relating to SeaWorld's previously unpaid rent. SeaWorld agreed to pay the City $8.5 million, split between the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund (MBPIF) and the Regional Park Improvement Fund (RPIF). Much of the settlement money is going toward projects in District 2, including implementation of the Robb Field General Development Plan, improvements to the South De Anza basketball courts and parking lot, and upgrades to the Dusty Rhodes restroom, playground, and parking lot.
Council Override of Mayoral Veto of the Proposed Fiscal Year 2026 Budget
On June 23, members of the City Council voted to override parts of Mayor Gloria's line-item veto of the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget. As a part of the minority of Councilmembers who voted against this decision, I have serious and ongoing concerns with my colleagues' decision to pass an unbalanced budget. We cannot spend money we do not have. This process is about more than just balancing numbers; it is about making sound, practical choices that preserve essential services for our residents and protect the fiscal stability of our city.
