Captain Tivanian speaks to community members in Carmel Valley.

Public safety remains a top priority of mine, and I am committed to supporting our first responders.

Community partnership with law enforcement is critical to keeping our neighborhoods safe. Last week, I joined SDPD Northwestern Division Captain Christopher Tivanian and Community Relations Officer John Briggs in responding to concerned neighbors in Carmel Valley and talking about ways to increase public safety. 

If you are interested in being more proactive within your community, tasks as simple as knowing your neighbors, forming a Neighborhood Watch, and reaching out to local law enforcement about suspicious activity can be extremely helpful in creating a safer community. 

Thank you to the Northwestern Division for your presence, engagement, and work to maintain public safety in our Northern communities. 

Recently, my office was notified about accumulation of trash along Via de la Valle. Team LaCava coordinated with City staff, and without delay, Environmental Services sent crews and removed the litter along the roadway. 

Thank you to Environmental Services Deputy Director Franklin Coopersmith for organizing this clean-up and Urban Corps for getting it done. Your work is crucial to keeping San Diego cleaner for all. 

Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach received their new Ladder Tiller Truck and opened their doors to the community for an open house to celebrate. As the Pacific Beach community does all year long, families came out to show their support for our local firefighters, and I joined the festivities with my granddaughter, Olivia. Hundreds of visitors toured the Fire House, checked out the equipment and fire rigs, enjoyed the search-and-rescue dogs, and purchased t-shirts with 100% of the proceeds supporting improvements at Fire Station 21.

Special thanks to Fire Chief Logan and Fire Station 21 firefighters for your hospitality, and thank you to PB Honorary Mayor Denise Friedman, PB Town Council, Mission Beach Town Council, PB Woman’s Club, Ocean Park Inn, and all the volunteers who contributed to make this event a success!

Labor Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the efforts of generations of workers who have made our economy fairer and more just.

We celebrate all workers who keep our local industries and economy moving, from tourism to mom-and-pop small businesses to our biotech industry. I am especially grateful to our City employees that bring their unique skills and talents in service of their neighbors, communities, and City. Thank you for all that you do each and every day!
