Vocational Day Program at Access Services
|
Last week, along with Rep. Melissa Cerrato, Rep. Steve Malagari, and members of Rep. Sanchez's and Rep. Ciresi’s staff, I was invited to visit Access Services in Colmar and observe their Vocational Day Program. The program provides an opportunity for up to 30 people living with an intellectual disability or autism to develop the skills needed for competitive employment, while recognizing that competitive employment is not everyone’s desired outcome. For some, the program provides a non-competitive, highly supported work environment based on ability. Along with developing skills for the workplace, participants also have an opportunity to volunteer and become more involved in the community.
Programs like the Vocational Day Program are extremely important in ensuring that people with intellectual disabilities or autism have work opportunities and feel valued and understood. Thank you to Access Services for hosting us and for supporting such a wonderful group of residents.
