Dear Inquirer,

San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: Happy Friday!

Welcome to this week’s Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall.

Did you vote?

Nadia and I voted this past Tuesday! Voting, just like speaking at City Council, sending emails to my office, and taking City surveys, is a civic contribution that shapes our future.

On Election Day, I am reminded of how powerful democracy is, how equally fragile it is, and how it requires attention from all of us to remain the glue that binds our country together and drives progress.

I hope you all took time to either mail in your ballots or go to the polls, and to pay attention to the issues you care about for the November general election. Your voice matters!

Join me at the next Coffee with Campillo

I bring the coffee. You bring the questions.

My next Coffee with Campillo is this month on Saturday, June 27, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Bayside Community Center. Click here to RSVP or email VVettiyil@sandiego.gov to let us know that you’ll be there.

These are always fantastic opportunities to chat about your need and hopes for the City. I look forward to it, and I hope to see you there!

Public health alert issued for e-bikes

As my staff and I continue to develop the e-bike policy I developed for San Diego, data continues to show that e-bikes are dangerous and the need for safety measures grows. The regulations will soon be coming to City Council, and if you'd like to voice your support, please click here.

This week, the County of San Diego issued a public health alert on e-bikes due to the rise in crashes and injuries, which disproportionately affect children. County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer led the charge on this effort, noting that the alert will allow for regional cooperation on tracking injuries and implementing change.

In an article shared by Fox, San Diego doctors noted disheartening statistics: “Last year we saw over 260 patients that were trauma activations. This year alone the first three months we’ve seen over 90 patients. We’re going to see over 300 patients this year the way that things are looking right now.”

I’m thankful for the County’s action on this public health issue and will continue to work on a policy for San Diegans.

Did you catch our favorite D7 small businesses?

May was small business month, so my staff and I gathered to pick our favorite District 7 small businesses and give them a shout on social media.

Many of these are businesses I’ve visited through my small business outreach. A good number of them are local gems, like Pho Hoa in Linda Vista, and are well-loved by the immediate community. Others, like Bear Buns Bakery in Serra Mesa, have been in the limelight on social media and attract people from all over the county for viral cinnamon rolls. We are so proud to be home to all of these incredible businesses!

To see our full list, visit my Instagram post here. If there’s a D7 small business that you don’t see on the list but would like us to check out, feel free to reply to this email!

An update on my call for funding to secure places of worship

Following the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego, Councilmember von Wilpert and I called on the State of California to pass $40 million in Governor Newsom’s revised state budget to support security enhancements for nonprofit organizations that have historically been targets of hate-motivated violence and attacks.

This week, Governor Newsom announced $80 million in funding, through the California Nonprofit Security Grant Program, to be distributed to hundreds of non-profit organizations that face security threats.

While I am extremely disheartened by the widespread need for protection against threats, I am incredibly thankful for the State’s investment in our community’s safety.

Sincerely,

Councilmember Raul A. Campillo
