Dear Inquirer,

San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: Happy Friday!

Welcome to this week’s Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall.

San Diego Expecting Tourism Boost from Olympic Games

The Los Angeles 28 Olympics announced this week that San Diego will be one of six cities to host group and knockout soccer matches.

As the Chair of Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations, and as City Council’s self-proclaimed “biggest soccer fan,” I greatly look forward to seeing what the games do for our regional economy. With a tourism economy that already “generates over $22 billion annually and supports more than 200,000 jobs throughout the region,” the Olympic matches will No specifics have been shared yet as to which matches we will host, but there is no doubt that it will be an exciting and busy time for San Diego.

Tickets for the matches will go on sale in April.

Trash Fee Assistance Program Launched

“Starting... Thursday, Jan. 22, customers of the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department (ESD) can apply for financial assistance to pay annual fees for trash and recycling services. Applications can be submitted online and in-person assistance will be available for people who need help with the application process. “

There are qualifications that households must meet to apply for this program. Although I did not support the trash fee, I advocated strongly for a financial assistance program, and I am happy to see it being offered. Please follow this link to read more about the qualifications and application process.

NBC San Diego: Some good news from the annual San Diego homeless point-in-time count

Last week, hundreds of volunteers canvassed San Diego County to take part in the annual Point-in-Time homelessness census, which our region relies on to understand the current status of homelessness and apply for grant funding.

NBC 7 reported some promising news about a section of District 7: According to San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF), an incredible organization whose work revolves around the San Diego River and evolved to do homelessness outreach, “There are half as many homeless individuals living along the San Diego River than there were just a few months ago.”

The City of San Diego and partner organizations, including SDRPF, have been working closely on moving folks out from the riverbed and into care through a multimillion-dollar grant that the City Council accepted last year. This grant specifically provided funding for segments of the river within District 7, which is the segment referenced in NBC 7 and San Diego River Park Foundation’s report. I’m grateful for the work that is being done to support our most vulnerable citizens and pleased to hear that visible progress is being made.

In 2024, I canvassed the riverbed with Sarah and the SDRPF team during the Point-in-Time count.

SDFC is BACK

SDFC is back and showing up to compete—this week, they dominated against Pumas UNAM to claim a 4-1 victory at the Concacaf Champions Cup. There were critical plays and goals by established team members and newly signed players, too, boding well for the upcoming MLS season.

SDFC’s first MLS season was incredible, but I anticipate an even better and more electric season this year. They continue to generate hype and build an ever-growing fanbase, which will surely show up to support. My family and I look forward to being a part of the crowd.

Here’s a great goal from the game.

Mana de San Diego Scholarship Open

Mana de San Diego—a local non-profit dedicated to the upward mobility and wellbeing of young Latinas—recently opened its scholarship! Applicants must be a Latina undergraduate student with a 2.75+ GPA, enrolled for Fall 2026-Spring 2027, and show financial need and community involvement. The scholarship is open to undocumented, DACA, and AB50 students.

I appreciate and support programming that brings up the next generations of students who will work and contribute their talents to San Diego. Big thanks to Mana de San Diego for uplifting promising students and encouraging their success!

Sincerely,

Councilmember Raul A. Campillo
