CAMPBELL CHRONICLES

November 28, 2025

Dear Inquirer,

Happy Thanksgiving! This is a time of year to reflect on all the blessings we have in our lives and to be grateful for them. Having a place to call home, food on the table, and family and friends surrounding us is worth giving thanks.

Today is also Native American Heritage Day, a time to celebrate the history and resilience of our country's First Nations. San Diego sits on the ancestral land of the Kumeyaay Nation, whose people have stewarded this region since time immemorial. Today, despite enduring a history of violence and prejudice, Indigenous community members continue to shape the very fabric of our city.

Earlier this month, the City Council proclaimed November to be Native American Heritage Month in the City of San Diego. Through this action, we reaffirmed our commitment to visibility, partnership, and respect for the Kumeyaay Nation and all our country's First Nations. As Native American Heritage Month draws to close, I encourage you to visit one of the Native-owned businesses in our city, including Kosay Kumeyaay Market in Old Town right here in District 2.

All the best,

Councilmember Jennifer Campbell
District 2
San Diego City Council

Fiscal Year 2027 City Council Budget Priorities

On November 18, the City Council released the first draft of the Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Priorities. This draft compiles budget memos from all nine Council offices and highlights priority issues in each District and Citywide. Ending homelessness, improving infrastructure, and maintaining public safety are some of the top issues identified by the Council in these memos.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

Last week, the City Council proclaimed November 20 to be "Transgender Day of Remembrance" in the City of San Diego. Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to honor the transgender individuals who have been taken from us through acts of violence, hatred, and discrimination. Here in San Diego, we believe that every person deserves dignity, safety, and the freedom to live as their authentic selves.

Small Business Saturday

Tomorrow, November 29, is Small Business Saturday. Amidst the craziness of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, Small Business Saturday is an opportunity to support local businesses and business owners by shopping small instead of at big companies. Here in District 2, we have many wonderful small businesses, so instead of spotlighting one this week, this is your opportunity to venture out into your community and discover a new small business to support. District 2 has two Business Improvement Districts, which are dedicated to creating a vibrant and thriving local economy. Check out the Business Improvement Districts in Ocean Beach and Old Town to start your Small Business Saturday shopping.

Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) Food Distribution Event at MCRD

Thank you to Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) for organizing their annual Thanksgiving food distribution event at the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot. Many enlisted servicemembers and their families stationed in San Diego will have a fresh Thanksgiving meal thanks to donations from STEP and Feeding San Diego.

Next Phase of Work for Pure Water SD - Traffic Control on Genesee Ave.

Beginning November 10, crews started installing underground pipes on Genesee Ave. between Clairemont Mesa Blvd. and Appleton St. To maintain the safety of the community during this phase of work, new traffic control will be installed. The southbound side of Genesee Ave. will be closed to through vehicle traffic for approximately three weeks, but local access will be maintained for residents, and one lane in either direction is currently maintained on the northbound side of Genesee Ave. Once the first phase of work is complete, crews will transition this traffic control to the northbound side of Genesee Ave. Crews will be performing work from 7am to 3pm Monday through Friday, for approximately eight weeks. This schedule is subject to change. Every street where pipeline is installed will be fully repaved curb to curb and re-striped. For your safety, please follow all posted signage.

Delivery of New Trash Bins Has Begun

The City's Environmental Services Department has begun delivering new gray trash bins to households eligible for City-provided trash service. Customers should look up when the delivery will occur for their neighborhood, and crews will remove the old black trash bins on that same day. The delivery process is expected to continue over the course of several months, and Environmental Services will notify customers about their bin delivery date through mailers to the property owner's address. To learn more about the delivery of new bins and see when your bin delivery date will be, you can click the button below or look online through your Residential Waste Collection Services Portal.
