Dear Inquirer,
Happy New Year! This holiday break, I have been reflecting on some of the things we have accomplished over the past year. Here are just a few highlights of the many things that happened in District 2 in 2025:
- Opened over 400 new affordable housing units serving veterans, families, individuals with disabilities, seniors, transition-aged youth, and formerly homeless San Diegans.
- Approved ten-year lease extensions with Campland.
- Unveiled the newly remodeled Terminal 1 at the San Diego International Airport.
- Secured $10,000 for a new all-terrain vehicle for the Ocean Beach Lifeguard Station.
- Completed the restoration of the old barracks and opened the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center, otherwise known as "The Joan" in Liberty Station.
- Allocated $100,000 among 29 Community Projects, Programs, and Services nonprofit agencies in District 2, including the Clairemont Town Council Foundation, I Love A Clean San Diego, the Ocean Beach Community Foundation, the Old Town San Diego Chamber of Commerce, and Point Loma Summer Concerts.
- Protected our city's coastal areas by passing the Coastal Resilience Master Plan.
- Opened a new Aldi grocery store in Clairemont.
- Created and funded an emergency Capital Improvement Project fund for the repairs needed at the North Mission Beach Lifeguard Station.
- Finalized the Clairemont Community Plan Update, which has not been updated in over 30 years.
- Accepted a $3 million donation for the Ocean Beach Library Expansion, which will start in 2026.
- Renewed the highly effective Automatic License Plate Reader and Smart Streetlight technologies, which help SDPD solve crimes.
- Recognized Arts District Liberty Station as one of California's ten new Cultural Districts.
- Celebrated several milestone anniversaries, including Clairemont's 75th anniversary and Belmont Park's 100th anniversary.
- Honored fallen police officer Austin Machitar by renaming the North Clairemont Community Park to the "Officer Austin Machitar Community Park."
As we begin a new year, I look forward to all the great things we will do as a community. For now, I wish you and your loved ones a happy New Year!

Vinya: vino + vinyasa
I attended the Clairemont Town Council's annual holiday party at Vinya: vino + vinyasa, where we celebrated a year's worth of community work. I talked with residents and noticed Vinya's charm: a yoga studio, a restaurant, and an intimate boutique. Vinya combines popular activities to save people time while offering a greater sense of balance in an often chaotic world. Owners Patrick and Victoria are married. They steadily built Vinya up over the years. One's visit supports a local business made by two people who took a chance together. To check them out, click the button below.

Clairemont Town Council Annual Christmas Party
Congratulations to the incoming officers of the Clairemont Town Council, who I swore in last month at the annual CTC Christmas Party. The CTC organizes many of Clairemont's most popular events, like the Garden Tour and Clairemont Family Day. These board members work hard to serve the Clairemont community, and I want to thank them for their commitment to their roles.

Last month, my Senior Policy Advisor Manuel Reyes joined Fire Chief Logan and our Fire-Rescue Department for the annual Bike with the Fire Chief & Holiday Toy Drive in Point Loma. Arts District Liberty Station Declared a California Cultural District
Arts District Liberty Station is one of ten new California Cultural Districts designated by the California Arts Council in December. These Cultural Districts represent a diverse and creative population, and having the official designation will give the Arts District access to state resources that will help them expand their impact even further. Congratulations to Arts District on this recognition!

Next Phase of Work for Pure Water SD - Traffic Control on Genesee Ave.
Beginning November 10, crews started installing underground pipes on Genesee Ave. between Clairemont Mesa Blvd. and Appleton St. To maintain the safety of the community during this phase of work, new traffic control will be installed. The southbound side of Genesee Ave. will be closed to through vehicle traffic for approximately three weeks, but local access will be maintained for residents, and one lane in either direction is currently maintained on the northbound side of Genesee Ave. Once the first phase of work is complete, crews will transition this traffic control to the northbound side of Genesee Ave. Crews will be performing work from 7am to 3pm Monday through Friday, for approximately eight weeks. This schedule is subject to change. Every street where pipeline is installed will be fully repaved curb to curb and re-striped. For your safety, please follow all posted signage.

Assembly Bill 379 Combatting Sex Trafficking Now In Effect
Assembly Bill 379, which was sponsored by Mayor Todd Gloria and San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan, went into effect on January 1 and allows law enforcement officers statewide to have greater ability to combat prostitution and sex trafficking on their city streets. This new law creates greater penalties for people who illegally pay for sex, and creates a greater support network for victims of sex trafficking, instead of punishing them.

Delivery of New Trash Bins Has Begun
The City's Environmental Services Department has begun delivering new gray trash bins to households eligible for City-provided trash service. Customers should look up when the delivery will occur for their neighborhood, and crews will remove the old black trash bins on that same day. The delivery process is expected to continue over the course of several months, and Environmental Services will notify customers about their bin delivery date through mailers to the property owner's address. To learn more about the delivery of new bins and see when your bin delivery date will be, you can click the button below or look online through your Residential Waste Collection Services Portal.
