Times of San Diego: City Council initiative would protect free beach and bay parking

Last week, I interviewed with the Times of San Diego on my proposal to protect free beach and bay parking. You can read the full article here, but I wanted to leave a couple quotes below, which capture my perspective on why the issue is so important to me:

“We need to send a signal that we are listening to our constituents, that we want to earn that trust back.”

“This pitting of people who might be able to vote for us, versus people in other cities, really is a political ploy... We should be voting to keep parking free at the city’s beaches and bays because our own city residents want it. The bottom line is, it’s the right thing to do.”

San Diego Union-Tribune: Concerning trends for seniors prompt shift in San Diego County

The cost of living is squeezing everyone in San Diego, but it’s especially difficult for seniors. A local group – The San Diego Seniors Community Foundation – hosted its first-ever State of Seniors to discuss the many difficulties that San Diego’s seniors face right now.

“Economic insecurity is cited as the largest threat currently impacting older residents. In its latest “State of Seniors Report,” the authors observed a 15% increase in the number of housing cost-burdened residents in 2025 as compared to 2024.”

“Homelessness among residents age 55 and older is also on the rise. Researchers estimate that the number of unhoused seniors increased 5% from 2024 to 2025.

Food insecurity, the rising cost of health care and long-term care are also called out as major factors affecting San Diego County residents as they arrive at retirement age less and less able to actually retire.”

My goal as a City Councilmember is to make San Diego work for everyone. That’s why I voted “No” on the trash fee, it’s why I voted “No” on Balboa Park paid parking, and it’s why I proposed a ballot initiative to keep parking free in beaches and bays. Attaching a cost to everything is pricing out those who worked hard to be here and would like to stay.

I’m thankful for The San Diego Seniors Community Foundation’s effort to track these issues and provide us reports, which will allow us to watch them and work on solutions.

New Wave FC Player is Highest Paid in the League

San Diego Wave just signed an incredible athlete to our team – Catarina Macario, Brazilian striker and powerhouse on the forward line. Catarina plays for Chelsea FC, the United States Women’s National Team, and brings hundreds of games worth of professional playing experience to the roster.

Her addition to the team is exciting for two reasons. Her contract is the “largest total-value deal in the history of women’s professional soccer,” a great indicator that women’s sports, and San Diego sports, are on the rise. She is also returning to San Diego, where she played for a local club and grew her talent at Torrey Pines High School.

Catarina, we are so excited to have you back in San Diego. We can’t wait to watch you make waves here.

New Food at Petco Park

Part of the reason San Diego loves baseball season is because we’ve got one of the best ballparks in the country. And part of the reason we’ve got one of the best ballparks in the country is the incredible lineup of restaurants that bring their culinary expertise and inventions to Petco Park.

This year, there are several new must-try food items at Petco Park. From longtime San Diego staple, Pop Pie Co., to new in-house sweet and savory pretzel options, to Japanese comfort food at Coco Ichibanya, there is a lot to choose from.
