My Bill for a Fairer Property Tax System

A court order this week requiring Allegheny County to complete a countywide property reassessment by 2032 highlights the fact that Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation without a requirement for regular property reassessments.

This has been a problem for too long, and I’m now working with state Rep. Jen Mazzocco to introduce legislation that would require every county in Pennsylvania to conduct a property reassessment on a regular cycle. Homeowners, renters, schools, and municipalities in Pennsylvania deserve a property tax system that is more transparent, predictable, and fair.

An adequate property tax system should not depend on a lawsuit to complete a property reassessment. Read more about how I’m working on this issue here.

New Truck for Avalon VFD

This week, I got a hands-on look at Avalon Volunteer Fire Company’s new mini pumper, which is their first new fire apparatus purchase since 1985. It is a great honor to have helped secure state grant funding that contributed toward this important purchase. It’s a great example of what we can accomplish when leaders in government and the community come together to address the needs of our first responders.

Thank you to Avalon Volunteer Fire Company for all you do to keep our neighbors safe. I am excited to see this new vehicle in service for many years to come!

Staff Appreciation at PNC Park

My staff works incredibly hard to deliver constituent services to all of our neighbors, so I was happy to take them all out to a game at PNC Park to express my gratitude for everything that they do. Even Mayor Corey O’Connor stopped by to show his appreciation! I am grateful for such a wonderful team to spend time with both in and out of the office. It was also a fitting farewell to our fantastic summer intern, Ben Heinlein, who is headed off to work in Morocco next week!

Upcoming Community Events

Stop by ALCOSAN’s Open House on Saturday, September 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to learn about their state-of-the-art wastewater treatment. This is a free, family-oriented event for everyone to take a behind-the-scenes tour of their 59-acre plant and a special lab tour. RSVP and get more details here.

Mark your calendar for Avalon Public Library's annual touch-a-truck event on Saturday, September 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local kids and adults can explore fire trucks, construction vehicles, and more of the big rigs that serve our community! This is such a fantastic event, and there is a quiet hour for those sensitive to noise.

Pittsburgh’s Department of City Planning is inviting residents, community organizations, businesses, and stakeholders from all 90 neighborhoods to join them this September for a series of public workshops to finalize draft plan content for PGH2050 – Pittsburgh's first Comprehensive Plan.
