Dear Inquirer,

San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: happy Friday!

Welcome to this week's Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall. Here’s what’s been going on this week:

Stop Signs Installed at Jackson Drive Intersection

Powerful scenes yesterday as City crews installed stop signs at the intersection of Jackson Drive and Lake Badin Ave, where Andrew Olsen was tragically taken from us last week as he and his sisters were walking to school. I’m grateful to Mayor Gloria and the City’s Transportation Department for their quick work on this in response to my request immediately following the incident.

I also want to thank all of you for your concerns, comments, questions, and outreach to our office. Dozens of residents reached out to ask for quick action on this, as well as for other safety improvements. I am grateful for your engagement and care for your neighbors.

I’m going to continue working to eliminate traffic incidents and deaths – including by conducting a comprehensive analysis of traffic patterns around all schools – because no family should ever have to suffer a tragedy like this again.

What a win on Sunday night! Following a 2-1 victory over Portland at Snapdragon, SDFC holds a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. We were proud to declare “Show Up for San Diego FC Week” at the City Council last week – and I think that pride and passion was on full display on Sunday. Let’s keep supporting our hometown team, and let’s get excited for the Wave to begin their playoffs soon, too!

Prop 1 Funds Designated for D7 Permanent Supportive Housing

Housing ends — and prevents — homelessness.

That’s why it was such a big win to receive $32.4 million from the State for an important project in District 7: Starling Place, which will purchase existing vacation rental apartments and convert them into permanent supportive housing.

Of the eighty units that will be coming online, forty will be reserved for veterans experiencing homelessness and the other forty will be for San Diegans in general with behavioral health challenges who are at risk of, or currently experiencing, homelessness.

The funding for this project comes from last year’s Proposition 1, which I fought hard to pass. With the Starling Place project, we’re seeing the direct impact of Prop 1 for our communities: delivering the exact kind of housing that we need to end homelessness, one person at a time.

I’ve been proud to be a supporter of this project from the beginning. Starling Place shows us that we’re most effective in addressing homelessness when we work together. Thank you to the San Diego Housing Commission and our partners at each level of government for your effort bringing this project to life.

Celebrating Eddie Garcia’s Story at the City Council

This week, I had the honor of declaring October 7th, 2025 as “Eddie Garcia Day” in San Diego!

If the name Eddie Garcia sounds familiar to you, it’s because we shared his story in the Raul Roundup a few weeks back as part of our Moment of Kindness series. As a refresher: Eddie is a fourth grader at Linda Vista Elementary who lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and inspires everyone around him with his strength, positivity, and kindness, his favorite word.

When Maria Alota-Smith (Eddie's teacher) and Chris Smith (Ms. Alota-Smith's husband) noticed that Eddie couldn’t fully participate in recess, they decided to build a custom F1-style racetrack so that he could race alongside his classmates. That act of love has now become a permanent part of the playground, representing the joy, compassion, and friendship that Linda Vista Elementary is all about. Above, Maria and Chris are pictured with Eddie following the proclamation at City Council.

Thank you to Eddie, Maria and Chris, and the entire Linda Vista Elementary School family for reminding us what kindness looks like. Proud to honor you this week at City Hall.
