I promised I’d keep pushing on Mission Bay restrooms

Evidently, advocacy works.

I have been pushing hard against the public health issue cause by the closed Mission Bay restrooms alongside community leaders and local medical professionals since it was proposed. I'm proud that my advocacy, along with that of tens of thousands of San Diegans on this important issue finally got through to the Mayor. Much needed relief is coming to our community.

I thank him for hearing what San Diegans have been asking for and delivering this week. Though we will see these restrooms opened today, the job is not done. They must be monitored and maintained, and I will continue to advocate for a cleaner, safer, more welcoming San Diego for everyone.

In addition, I will be introducing an ordinance to continue promoting public access to Mission Bay Park by maintaining free parking, helping ensure the park remains affordable and accessible for residents and visitors alike at the Rules Committee on August 26, 2026, at 9 a.m. To join the meeting to voice your support, you can sign-up by clicking here.

San Diego Human Society adoptions are 50% off through the end of the month

In their annual Clear the Shelters event, San Diego Human Society (SDHS) is offering 50% off all adoptions through the end of August.

With a recent large influx of rescued animals, SDHS is urging San Diegans who have been thinking about adopting a new furry friend to swing by, visit their adoptable animals, and consider bringing one home.

Adorable and sweet pups like Gorda, who I met on my most recent visit, are medically and behaviorally cared for by the incredible SDHS staff. They are ready for their forever families. While Gorda, who you can see in the video of my visit below, was adopted shortly after I left, there are many like her who can’t wait to meet you!

New features coming to Get It Done app

The Get It Done app, which San Diegans can use to report issues like code violations and potholes, is getting a major upgrade.

Soon, users will be able to report 46 different kinds of problems specific to the parks rather than one general park problem. This will include issues like water fountain and sprinkler issues.

In addition, users will be able to report illegal off-leash dogs, which will hopefully allow swifter response times and enforcement. The app will also now include “complaint-specific estimates for how long a fix is likely to take,” a question I frequently respond to in my inbox.

These changes were already rolled out on the website for Get It Done, but they will soon come to your app. I’m thankful for these changes and looking forward to seeing this implemented. If you have any other Get It Done feedback, be sure to share!

The Traveler: San Diego Tourism Surges as Coastal Experiences Draw Millions

San Diego residents know that our beaches and bays are world-class. The rest of the world knows, too.

As the Traveler recently reported, “recent industry data show San Diego firmly embedded in a statewide tourism boom, with the region welcoming an estimated 32.5 million visitors in 2024 and generating a total economic impact of about 22 billion dollars. Publicly available figures indicate that direct visitor spending alone has climbed to roughly 14.6 to 14.8 billion dollars, a record performance that surpasses pre-pandemic benchmarks and underscores the strength of demand for the coastal city.”

As the Chair of our Economic and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, and a huge proponent of supporting our tourism economy with policies that welcome visitors, I love to see this data.

To invest in upkeeping infrastructure, maintaining and beautifying our public spaces, cleaning our streets and keeping San Diego the second-safest big city in the country is to invest in our future.
