I am constantly filled with pride in the spirit of service that characterizes our district. April is National Volunteer Month, a time when we honor the importance of volunteerism and the volunteers that uplift our communities.

This week during City Council, several D1 residents were appointed by the Mayor and ratified by the City Council to serve on various Boards and Commissions. These appointees are remarkable individuals who give their time and talent for the benefit of our City and our communities.

I extend my congratulations and gratitude to:

  • Ian Clampett, Reappointed to the Resiliency Advisory Board;
  • Merle Richman, appointed to the Airports Advisory Committee; and
  • Parsa Arya Avaz-Barandish, appointed to the Youth Commission.

Thank you for your dedication to our community, and thank you to all of the volunteers in our community organizations and associations for making District 1 what it is!

La Jolla Shores Association 60th Anniversary

The La Jolla Shores Association celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. For six decades, LJSA has served as a vital forum for the La Jolla Shores community to advocate for issues that improve the quality of life for La Jollans.

I was delighted to recognize the Association’s role in protecting and enhancing the Shores for residents, businesses, and visitors at Tuesday’s City Council meeting by proclaiming April 7, “La Jolla Shores Association 60th Anniversary Day”.

Congratulations on reaching this incredible milestone!

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at Ellen Browning Scripps Park

Earlier today, I was joined by City leaders from the Transportation and Parks and Recreation Departments and La Jolla Parks and Beaches for a ribbon-cutting at Ellen Browning Scripps Park.

Together, we officially opened the newly widened sidewalk path along Coast Boulevard. Community advocates have wanted to see this project come to fruition since the mid-2010s. This walkway for residents and tourists alike was suffering from its popularity. With too narrow a sidewalk and the adjacent grass ground into a dirt path, this iconic park needed a sidewalk to match, wide enough to accommodate the volume of foot traffic, strollers, and wheelchairs. I am proud to have secured both funding and early action to deliver this improvement.

I applaud Park and Recreation Department staff and the Transportation Department's in-house construction team, for initiating and completing this project ahead of schedule and under budget with minimal impacts to the community and scheduled events.

New Recycling Bin Deliveries

The City of San Diego has begun delivery of new recycle bins to households eligible for City-provided trash and recycling collection. These replacements will continue through early fall.

These new light blue recycling bins will replace the old dark blue bins and feature quality upgrades including:

  • helpful labels to make waste sorting easier;
  • scannable reader tags that can help locate missing bins, track performance, and ensure service is provided only to eligible customers;
  • materials less prone to breakage; and
  • space to write your address.

Delivery is taking place under a phased schedule based on route and collection day of the week, so your neighbor across the street may receive their bin on a different day than you.

The City is notifying eligible property owners about their estimated delivery date and other instructions through email and mailers. You can find your estimated delivery date online at sandiego.gov/trash using the Container Delivery Lookup tool.

Women in Blue, Heart of Service

I had the pleasure of attending The San Diego Police Foundation’s 15th Annual Women in Blue Luncheon last week. This event is part of the San Diego Police Foundation’s Women in Blue Initiative, a partnership between the Police Foundation and SDPD to connect women in law enforcement to career advancement opportunities, mentorship, and community engagement.

This year’s theme was “Heart of Service,” underscoring the purpose and dedication that characterizes the service of our remarkable law enforcement officers. Hundreds gathered to celebrate the exceptional work of SDPD Northern District’s own Captain Jo Makwana, Assistant Crime Lab Director Stacey Houg, and Officer Serafina Marquez.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment, leadership, and heart of service to keep D1 and our city safe and empower the next generation of women in blue!

Upcoming: Learn Life-saving Skills at the Library

The Carmel Valley Library is hosting San Diego Project Heart Beat on Tuesday, April 21 for a free CPR and AED workshop from 12 to 1 p.m.

According to the American Heart Association, administering CPR immediately can increase an individual’s chance of survival by two to three times. Regrettably, only approximately 4 out of 10 individuals who experience cardiac arrest receive this life-saving assistance before professional help arrives.

This workshop can give you the confidence and skills you need to help when it is needed most.

RSVP at heartbeatadmin@sandiego.gov.
