Protecting Good Samaritans
|
This week at the state Capitol, I co-hosted a hearing with the House Majority Policy Committee on legislation I’ve introduced with Rep. Paul Friel, D-Chester, to improve safety on college campuses by increasing Good Samaritan protections for students who call law enforcement for help.
We heard powerful testimony from Rowan Price, a former Bloomsburg University student who, despite not imbibing or furnishing any alcohol nor being present when others were drinking, was charged by police with reckless endangerment (punishable by up to two years in prison) after he discovered a student in his dormitory bathroom suffering from alcohol poisoning and called for help.

In an emergency, the difference between life and death can come down to whether someone is willing to stop and render aid. No one, especially a young person faced with a frightening situation, should hesitate to help because they’re worried about getting in trouble.

Strengthening Civil Rights Protections
|
On Tuesday, the House Judiciary Committee held a voting meeting, where I was proud to vote for several bills to strengthen equal rights protections. From the Fairness Act to modernizing outdated HIV laws and banning the so-called “gay panic” defense, we’re working to ensure everyone is protected.

Final Week of Budget Hearings
|
Budget hearings wrapped up at the state Capitol this week, concluding with the Departments of Health, Drug and Alcohol Programs, Aging, Revenue, and Transportation, our State-Related Universities (Penn State, Pitt, Temple, and Lincoln), PASSHE and Community College leaders, the State Police, and the Office of the Budget.
Over the last three weeks, my colleagues and I have had some very productive discussions across 21 hearings with leaders of different departments and agencies. As state budget negotiations continue, we’ll keep working to deliver a budget that prioritizes the people of Pennsylvania.

You May Be Eligible for Heating Bill Assistance
|
While we saw some warmer days earlier this week, weather over the last two days reminds us that colder temperatures are never far away this season so it’s important to let folks know that the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is still accepting applications.
LIHEAP helps families pay their heating bills through a one-time cash grant, which is sent directly to the utility or fuel provider and credited to the recipient’s account. Eligible households can receive $200 to $1,000, depending on household size, income, and fuel type. Families facing an immediate loss of heat may be eligible for additional crisis grants.
My office can assist you with LIHEAP applications and answer your questions.
