Dear Inquirer,

Last year, House Republicans made the right choice to focus on real priorities instead of padding government programs. I led the charge on a responsible budget that delivered no taxes on tips, overtime, or Social Security, and we made a historic investment in local road repairs.

Democrats accepted it. They agreed to it. They signed it.

Now, instead of continuing on that proven path, the governor is asking for $800 million in tax hikes and pulling $400 million out of our rainy day fund. This will not happen under my watch.

Let’s be clear about the contrast:

Last year, House Republicans cut $800 million in waste, fraud, and abuse.

This year, the governor wants to raise $800 million in new taxes.

We eliminated 2,000 ghost employees who were sitting on the state payroll costing taxpayers money. And now we’ve found thousands more.

Instead of cleaning that up, the governor has proposed adding 1,000 more positions tied to programs that we believe deserve serious scrutiny.

House Republicans cut slush funds and fought wasteful programs in court because taxpayers deserve accountability. The governor’s plan actually increases spending on those same programs.

I think our success last year shows we do not need tax hikes on working families. We do not need to raid the rainy day fund. And we certainly do not need to grow government when we have billions in leftover waste still sitting in the system.

The right path is the one we proved works: keep cutting waste, keep eliminating fraud, keep rooting out abuse, and protect taxpayers.

Sincerely,

Matt Hall

Speaker of the House
