Promoting Partnership between the City and Community Groups
|
Council President LaCava speaking at the reopening of the Fanuel Street Park playground made possible through collaboration between the City of San Diego, San Diego Parks Foundation, Zoom Recreation, and the Pacific Beach Community.

Local non-profits and community partners are the bedrock of what makes San Diego “America’s Finest City.” Non-profit and community organizations like the San Diego Parks Foundation, Groundwork San Diego, La Jolla Coastal Conservancy, and many others have been collaborating with the City to steward, rejuvenate, and revitalize public spaces across San Diego for years. Unfortunately, too many times, residents interested in undertaking a project have difficulty navigating bureaucracy and red-tape at City Hall.
For years, I have worked across City departments and City leadership to cut red-tape and make it easier for donors and community groups to partner with the City.
My team and I are developing a policy to improve the public-private partnership process at the City. I am grateful to the many volunteers and groups like the La Jolla Coastal Conservancy for their work to enhance some of D1’s most iconic spaces. I know that when we come together, we get things done.

As part of the City of San Diego’s Urban Forestry Program, the City is pruning thousands of trees in D1 communities. Proper pruning prevents falling debris, can promote pedestrian safety, and maintain tree health. The City has already pruned approximately 1,300 trees in the 92037 zip code and plans to trim 1,000 palm trees in Bird Rock, the Village of La Jolla, and La Jolla Shores. The anticipated completion of this work is October 1. While traffic impacts are expected to be minimal during the remaining palm tree pruning, please keep an eye out for traffic control and workers.
Please continue reporting needed tree maintenance, vegetation encroachment, and other City repairs via the Get It Done app or at sandiego.gov/get-it-done.

PB Arts Center Groundbreaking
|
I was honored to participate in PB Arts Center’s “groundbreaking” celebration as the community’s vision begins to take shape. I joined community members and donors for a “first look” at the old library. The quality construction of this 75-year-old building has stood the test of time, and the new vision will be thoughtfully integrated into this iconic building.
PB Arts Center is reimagining how the old Pacific Beach Library can serve the PB community. Pacific Beach has no shortage of creativity and culture, and this center will be a community anchor, providing arts education, programming, and artists with a central space for all to enjoy.
Thank you, PB Arts Center and beautifulPB, for your work to transform the former Pacific Beach Library into a community-driven space.

Today marks 25 years since one of the most tragic days in our Nation’s history. We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and honor the courage and bravery of first responders on 9/11.
Importantly, in their memory, we recommit ourselves to carry on the work of fostering unity, deepening understanding, and strengthening bonds between one another in our communities and across the City.
