Standing against Cuts to D1's Recreation Centers and Libraries
|
City Council, as the Budget Review Committee, formally reviewed the Mayor’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. We heard from the public, examined the City’s finances, and dove deep with department leaders to determine the effects of the proposed cuts. There are no silver bullets to address the budget shortfall, and I recognize the difficulty of considering additional budgetary reductions on the heels of last year’s cuts.
While balancing the budget is a legal obligation, the initial proposed cuts to D1 go too far. When addressing leadership of the City’s Parks and Recreation and Library Departments, I stated – on the record – how important our parks, recreation centers, and libraries are to our community and the harm of the proposed closures. I am working with the Mayor, operational departments, and community partners to avoid cuts to D1’s public spaces.
The Mayor’s “May Revision” will be released on May 13, and I am working to get D1 priorities included in that update. Council looks forward to your feedback as we scheduled another listening session on Monday, May 18th at 6:00 P.M. Your voice matters. I am listening to and fighting for the District.

Groundbreaking at Fanuel Street Park
|
The Parks and Recreation Department broke ground on a new playground structure at Fanuel Street Park. Following the 2024 King Tides, the City removed the previous, aging playground equipment due to damage. The soon-to-be-installed play structure is made with environmentally friendly materials and designed to resist corrosion and King Tides.
Thank you, San Diego Parks Foundation, Zoom Recreation, and community members for bringing this to fruition.
Stay tuned for the soon-to-be announced ribbon-cutting date!

Pacific Beach Graffiti Removal
|
I joined the PB Town Council, members of the community, and the Mayor for the Pacific Beach Town Council’s 16th Annual Graffiti Cleanup. Starting with two dozen volunteers that organized and managed the clean-up, this year we were joined by over 100 volunteers who showed up to benefit their community and removed hundreds of tags and stickers. Together, residents cleaned up facades, alleys, and signs throughout Pacific Beach.
Thank you to all the volunteers, the PB Town Council, and the event sponsors!

Letter Carrier's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
|
According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, approximately one in five D1 residents is nutrition insecure. You can make a difference and help our neighbors in need. Saturday, May 9th is Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. To participate, place one or more bags of non-perishable food items by your mailbox, and your letter carrier will pick up the items. All donations will benefit the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
