Dear Neighbor,
Over the last couple of weeks, we delivered some real wins for working Philadelphians.
We moved my bills to safeguard IVF access, lower housing costs, protect consumers from deceptive advertising, and strengthen disability rights.
We also advanced legislation to lower utility bills and make healthcare more affordable and cut Pennsylvanians’ property taxes by up to $500 million a year.
Whether it's lowering costs, standing up to powerful interests, or protecting consumers, I'm focused on making government work for you, not big corporations or other special interests.
More below.
Warm regards,
Tarik

🏡 Voting to Cut Property Taxes by $329M a Year
|
For too long, working Pennsylvanians have shouldered the tax burden while some of the world’s largest tech companies have made billions from Pennsylvania consumers and businesses.
Last week, my House colleagues and I voted to ensure companies like Google and Meta pay their fair share. The revenue would be used to cut property taxes by approximately $329 million a year, with the potential to grow to $500 million annually, providing meaningful relief for Pennsylvania homeowners. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Protecting You From AI Deception
|
Last week the House passed my bipartisan bill with Rep. Chris Pielli requiring businesses to disclose when AI-generated content is used to advertise or sell products and services.
As AI-generated content becomes more common and harder to detect, consumers deserve to know when images, videos, or testimonials are being used to sell a product or service. This commonsense bill helps prevent deceptive advertising and gives you the transparency you deserve.

Our House Bill 95 passed with strong bipartisan support, 124-78, and now heads to the Senate!
|
|
This week, the House passed HB 2145, legislation I was proud to introduce with Rep. Greg Scott to remove toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” from a range of consumer products. PFAS have been linked to serious health concerns and can persist in the environment for decades.
|
|
This bill would phase out their use in products such as cosmetics, dental floss, menstrual products, and items intended for children, helping protect Pennsylvania families from unnecessary exposure. I was grateful to co-prime sponsor this legislation with Rep. Scott and I am hopeful the Senate will act quickly to advance this important public health measure.

Working to Lower Prescription Drug Costs
|
So-called Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) are supposed to lower costs. Instead, just three mega corporations now control roughly 80% of the market while prescription drug prices rise and independent pharmacies struggle to survive.
I spoke up - with a PBM lobbyist in attendance - last week when we debated how to make this system fair for patients and our local pharmacies. Click here or the image below to watch my brief comments:

Fighting for Lower Utility Bills ⚡
|
Last week, I voted for amendments to HB 2224, legislation that would help lower utility bills by cutting Pennsylvania’s 5.9% utility gross receipts tax and limiting excessive profits for utility monopolies. Pennsylvanians deserve affordable, reliable utility service—not ever-higher bills that pad corporate profits.
|

The bill is expected to receive a final House vote this week before moving to the Senate. I’m also working with Rep. Fiedler on additional legislation to ensure ratepayers aren’t forced to foot the bill for excessive utility executive compensation and other unnecessary corporate expenses.

☀️ The 'Golden Girls' Housing Bill Advances
|
This week, the House overwhelmingly passed two bipartisan bills I co-prime sponsored to help address Pennsylvania’s housing shortage. The “Golden Girls Bill” would make it easier for a small group of unrelated adults to legally share a home, helping friends reduce housing costs and age in place together.
|

|
The House also passed legislation that I introduced to expand access to accessory dwelling units (ADUs), such as in-law suites and backyard cottages. ADUs can help older adults remain in their homes, keep families closer together, and create additional affordable housing options in existing neighborhoods.

Supreme Court Ruling: Sunset for PA's Gambling 'Wild West' Skill Games
|
For years, more than 70,000 unregulated skill games operated across Pennsylvania with little oversight, raising concerns about underage access, consumer protections, problem gambling, and public safety.
|

|
The PA Supreme Court has just ruled these “skill games” are actually glorified slot machines, and can be regulated as such. Their decision ends years of uncertainty and gives the General Assembly an opportunity to replace this "Wild West" system with clear rules that protect consumers, support legitimate businesses, and ensure proper oversight. Stay tuned as we work toward a system that is fair, accountable, and protects Pennsylvania communities!

🏛️Harrisburg Update: Making Healthcare More Affordable
|
Last week in Harrisburg, my House colleagues and I passed several bills that will help Pennsylvania families, workers, and communities.
We passed legislation to help reduce property taxes for older Pennsylvanians by requiring large tech companies to pay their fair share through a tax on digital advertising (HB 1678). We also approved a bill to help small businesses provide health insurance for their employees by creating a tax credit for employers who contribute to coverage through Pennie.
We took steps to strengthen our democracy by helping counties process mail ballots more efficiently and by keeping foreign money out of Pennsylvania elections (HB 37 and HB 497).
As a nurse, I'm especially proud that we passed our legislation protecting access to fertility treatments for Pennsylvania families (HB 836– more below!), expanding protections against the nonconsensual sharing of intimate images, including AI-generated images (HB 2252), and banning harmful PFAS "forever chemicals" from products many people use every day (HB 2145).
These bills now move to the Senate for consideration and reflect our continued work to make Pennsylvania healthier, safer, and more affordable for everyone.
|
Shortly after taking office, I met disability self-advocate Michael Anderson, who shared how people with disabilities are too often prevented from fully participating in public events because they need a personal care attendant.
I was proud to work with Michael and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission to develop guidance clarifying how public venues should provide reasonable accommodations at entertainment venues, including not charging personal care attendants.
After nearly four years of advocacy and collaboration, that guidance has now been formally enacted into code—a major victory for disability rights and accessibility in Pennsylvania!

Protecting Access to IVF in PA 🧑🏻🍼
|
Last week, I joined Representatives Jennifer O'Mara, La'Tasha Mayes, and Arvind Venkat in passing our bill, HB 836, to protect access to IVF and other fertility treatments in Pennsylvania.
The bill protects the ability of individuals and couples struggling with infertility to use treatments like IVF to have children by establishing a legal right to access assisted reproductive technology and helping ensure these treatments remain available to Pennsylvanians who need them.
For many families, IVF provides a pathway to parenthood. Every person deserves the opportunity to build the family they dream of having, and this legislation helps protect that opportunity here in Pennsylvania.
Next, the bill goes to the Senate for consideration.

Holocaust and Anti-Hate Education Grant Program
|
I was grateful to visit the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center this week. Since opening in 2011, the museum has educated nearly half a million students through exhibits and presentations led by Holocaust survivors and the children and grandchildren of survivors.
Their work helps preserve these important stories and ensures future generations understand the consequences of hatred, prejudice, and antisemitism.
That mission is one reason I introduced legislation to create a Holocaust and Anti-Hate Education Grant Program, helping schools across Pennsylvania expand access to programs like these and strengthen education that promotes understanding, tolerance, and respect. Learn more by clicking here.

Solidarity with Jefferson Einstein Nurses 🩺
|
As a nurse, I know that nurses do not vote to strike lightly. We enter this profession because we care deeply about our patients, and our first instinct is always to be at the bedside providing care. Nurses build relationships with patients and families, advocate for them during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and take that responsibility seriously.
That is why I stand with the nurses at Jefferson Einstein. Their concerns about safe staffing, workplace safety, and quality patient care are fundamentally about making sure patients receive the care they deserve. Nurses know that when units are adequately staffed and healthcare workers have the support they need, patients have better outcomes and safer experiences.
I recently shared more of my thoughts on this issue in a video message (linked here and by clicking on the image below). I encourage you to watch it to learn more about why I support these nurses and why these concerns matter for both healthcare workers and the patients they serve every day.

⚽Wishing Willem Van Beelen the Best on His Next Adventure
|
Last week we said goodbye to our intern, Willem Van Beelen.
After completing his senior year at Penn Charter (and scoring the go-ahead goal to lift the Quakers to the Inner AC championship title!), Willem wrapped up his time with our office by sharing what he learned during his internship. A standout student and soccer player, he’s headed to Spain for a gap year to pursue new opportunities and continue developing his skills on the field.
Thank you, Willem, for all your hard work and contributions. Safe travels, and best of luck on this exciting next chapter — we’ll be cheering you on from Philadelphia! ⚽️🌍

We May be Coming to Your Block ...
|
One of the most impactful times of my life was going door to door, giving vaccines in my free time for people who couldn't access them.
This summer, members of my district office team will be out across the community knocking on doors and talking directly with residents about the services our office provides. We'll be sharing information about state programs, answering questions, and making sure neighbors know where to turn when they need help navigating the government.
We'll also be helping residents learn about Philadelphia's street tree program and how they can request a street tree for their block. Street trees help reduce urban heat, improve air quality, manage stormwater, and make our neighborhoods healthier and more beautiful places to live.
If you see our team out in the neighborhood, please stop and say hello!
And if you’d like a free street tree click here or the image below!

🍎 Happy Charter Day, PFT Local 3!!
|
I was honored to join the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers as they celebrated the 85th anniversary of their charter.
For generations, PFT members have fought for strong public schools and student success. Congratulations to PFT Local 3 on 85 years of advocacy and service and thank you for all you do for Philadelphia’s students and families.
Watch the video below for highlights from the celebration.

I wrapped up the week by connecting with neighbors across the district—celebrating a new food business in Andorra, enjoying the Ben Arnold concert at Gorgas Park, visiting the neighbors at the Roxborough United Neighbors community garden on Monastery, and helping to support the Water Tower Rec Center.
|
Thank you for the opportunity to serve this community I love.
All my best,
Tarik
