Reproductive Rights Rally

This week, I joined my colleagues and the Women's Law Project to celebrate a major victory for reproductive health, rights, and justice in our state. Recently, the Commonwealth Court of PA ruling in Allegheny Reproductive Health v. PA DHS established reproductive autonomy as a fundamental right under the PA Constitution. Your insurance plan should never determine your right to access essential reproductive healthcare. I have introduced legislation to ensure this right for all women in our state, even if this ruling continues to be challenged. There is so much more work to do to reinforce these fundamental rights, but for now, I look forward to a future of equal access.

April Legislative Update

April was another productive and busy month in Harrisburg! This month I attended a hearing on hospital accountability with the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus and had a board meeting for the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority. I also met with constituents from the Harvard Club of Philadelphia and caught up with former President of Paoli Hospital, Jim Paradis.

I am proud to report that this month I voted YES on good legislation.

These bills include:

  • H.B. 2400 - Governor Shapiro's proposed 2026/27 budget, which passed with bipartisan support.
  • H.B. 2103 - Improves protections against discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.
  • H.B. 72 - Ensures victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking may terminate a lease early for their protection.
  • H.B. 1706 - Provides mental health education for coaches, student athletes, and parents.
  • S.B. 507 - Establishes licensure for certified midwives in PA
  • H.R. 451 - Designates April 11-17 as Black Maternal Health Week to raise awareness about the ongoing maternal health crisis in Pennsylvania and the United States.

Sincerely,

Rep. Melissa Shusterman
