Today, we acknowledge the attacks on our nation in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, PA and the humbling tragedy 25 years ago. I was humbled to attend the Delco remembrance ceremony at the Law Enforcement Memorial in Rose Tree Park in Media. We honor the lives lost that day and the sacrifice of the first responders who rushed into the chaos to help those in need and in crisis. On that day and in the immediate aftermath, we were all united as Americans – undivided by region, race, politics, or affiliation. Twenty-five years later that unity remains a goal to achieve again.

I hope you take time to recognize this solemn anniversary internally, with your loved ones, and in your community.

I was honored to take part this week in the historic legislative session of the PA House of Representatives at Congress Hall in Philadelphia commemorating America’s 250th birthday and celebrating Pennsylvania’s lasting contribution to our nation’s founding.

Some of the U.S. Constitution’s most enduring principles were inspired by Pennsylvania’s Constitution, adopted in September 1776, so it was a stirring event to be part of as an elected legislator.

I was also privileged to welcome Nyla Marie Brown, a senior from John Bartram High School, who represented our 185th District as part of a civic learning initiative developed in partnership with America250PA to engage high school students from across the state in learning about government and civic responsibility. Nyla is an amazing young woman and I was proud to welcome her at our historic events this week.

Another part of our recognition of 250 years of American democracy was a panel discussion on independence and inclusion at the historic Mother Bethel AME Church at 6th and Lombard on Thursday morning. It was an insightful discussion hosted by PA Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton and WURD’s Solomon Jones, including three other Black Speakers of the House from across the nation to examine the challenges facing our democracy today and how to ensure that government continues to reflect the ideals of freedom, equity, and inclusion. Early this week, I joined the House Majority Policy Committee on the edge of the 185th along the Delaware River for a roundtable discussion and tour to learn more about river pilots and their challenges and how we can help their mission. Our river pilots are on call at all hours to assist commercial vessels with safe navigation on the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers as far as south the Delaware Bay. It was an eye-opening experience to learn about the obstacles they face and the intense training they undergo for their profession to ensure safety along our waterways. I want to thank the Pilots’ Association for giving us a firsthand observation of the job and the challenges these brave pilots face. The Pennsylvania Treasury has launched a new online Financial Education Hub, providing a centralized collection of resources to help you improve your financial literacy and make informed financial decisions.

The hub covers topics including budgeting, saving, retirement planning, digital assets and cryptocurrency, along with information about Treasury programs such as PA 529, Keystone Scholars, and PA ABLE. Resources are tailored to groups including students, teachers, active-duty military members, veterans, and older adults.

The general election for 2026 is right around the corner! Now is the time to make sure that you are registered to vote in PA and your voter information is correct (such as your street address, if you moved recently), find where your polling place is located, or to apply for a mail-in ballot. Monday, Oct. 19 is the deadline to register for this important election! Join the conversation and make sure your voice is heard at the polls for you, your family, and your community.

My office was happy to participate in the Block-by-Block Neighborhood walk with the Mayors Neighborhood Community Action Centers, the 12th Police District and other city agencies.

It was so nice to connect with parents and students at the Back to School nights at Patterson Elementary and Tilden Middle School this week!

We were also fortunate to connect with parents and students at the Back to School nights for the Girard Academic Music Program.
