The incident that occurred on Monday in San Carlos was absolutely heartbreaking. My prayers go out to Andrew’s family, as well as the entire Pershing Middle School and San Carlos community, as we all grieve this awful event.
In every call I received this week from constituents, the message was clear: we need to do something and we need to do it now. As I spoke to Mayor Gloria directly about this, I relayed the emotions that our community is feeling right now; thank you to each and every one of you who reached out to our office about this tragic incident.
In speaking to the Mayor, he assured me that the City would take all necessary actions to make the stretch of Jackson Drive safer for everyone who travels through the area. As an immediate measure, I called on the City to install stop signs at the intersection of Jackson Drive and Lake Badin Avenue, while longer-term safety improvements are also pursued. Per my request, I have been informed by the City’s Transportation Department that the signs will be installed by this coming Friday, October 31.
And because we know we need more than just one road to be safe – all roads should be safe – we will be pushing the City to study all schools in our district to identify dangers and the best solutions to protect kids walking to school.
The safety of our community is my top priority. I will do everything in my power to help ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again. As we grieve this terrible event, let’s hold each other close, be there for our neighbors, be there for Andrew’s family, and help our community heal.
