Passing big bills in Harrisburg
|
This week, my House colleagues and I passed important bills that will help our neighbors and improve communities:
- We’re protecting your privacy while maintaining public safety by regulating the use of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs), like Flock cameras (HB 2771).
- We’re improving access to healthcare by requiring private insurance and Medicaid coverage for preventative measures, testing, and treatments for osteoporosis, beginning at the onset of menopause (HB 1827), as well as requiring insurance coverage for vaginal estrogen to treat menopausal symptoms and as a preventative measure for recurring UTIs (HB 2545). We’re also requiring health insurance coverage for colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 45 (HB 1123) and establishing a firefighter cancer screening program (HB 2826).
- We’re protecting kids by banning the use of cell phones in schools (SB 1014), requiring that childcare providers keep a supply of and train their staff to properly use EpiPens (HB 928) and requiring mandated reporters to report to Childline if they suspect the existence of child sexual abuse material, AI child sexual abuse material and hazing (HB 2474).
- We’re putting more money back in families’ pockets by updating the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit program to align with recent federal updates (HB 2706).
- We’re holding Big Tech accountable by prohibiting data centers from obtaining public utilities status (HB 2674).
- We’re protecting consumers by establishing a user-friendly, centralized public database to provide clear, accessible information on utility rates and proposed rate increases (HB 2584).

Collingdale cleanup of Pusey Run Spur
|
Last weekend, I stopped by the Collingdale cleanup of Pusey Run Spur!
Thanks to the Collingdale Planning Commission and the Darby Creek Valley Association for partnering in this important effort to protect our local watersheds and keep our community clean.
|
Planning Commission Chair William Lighter and Mayor Donna Matteo-Spadea were there bright and early, and it was especially exciting to see Academy Park staff and students rolling up their sleeves to make a difference!

Congratulating a local Girl Scout for an amazing achievement
|
Congratulations to Eli Faber, a local Girl Scout from Lansdowne, on the grand opening of the Teen Resource Closet!
As part of her journey toward earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Eli has created an incredible resource to support teens in our community. The closet provides free clothing, hygiene products, menstrual products, winter items, and other essential necessities for young people in the Penn Wood and Upper Darby School District communities.
I was happy to stop by last Saturday to celebrate this wonderful initiative and donate supplies to help support her mission. If you’re interested in donating, her closet can be found at First Presbyterian Church of Lansdowne (140 N. Lansdowne Avenue).

Highlighting Collingdale Library’s pollinator and vegetable garden
|
Did you know that Collingdale Library has a pollinator and vegetable garden?
The library, Collingdale Parks and Recreation, and a local non-profit came together this spring and summer to develop The Dirt Lab! They built a beautiful garden with children while providing education, field trips, and good old summer fun!
The library is looking for volunteers to keep the garden going. Stop by or give the library a call if you want to get involved.

The importance of preparing for house fires
|
Earlier this month, my staff and I attended the Primos-Secane Westbrook Park Fire House Fire Prevention Week Expo. We enjoyed meeting local firefighters, police officers, families and some adorable four-legged friends while learning more about the important work our first responders do to keep our communities safe.
While Fire Prevention Week has passed, it’s always a good time to make sure your house is prepared:
- Test your smoke alarms and make sure they are installed on every level of your home and near sleeping areas.
- Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room, when possible, and practice it with everyone in your household.
- Choose an outdoor meeting place safely away from your home so everyone knows where to go.
- Keep exits clear, know how to call 911, and make sure children know what to do if they hear a smoke alarm.
- Prepare for other emergencies by keeping an emergency kit with essentials such as water, a flashlight, batteries and necessary medications.

Thanks to Penn Medicine for making our Mobile Mammogram Screening Event possible!
|
Thanks to Penn Medicine for partnering with my office to bring our Mobile Mammogram Screening Event to Clifton Heights!
Penn Medicine’s Cancer Detection on Wheels mammogram van brought free breast cancer screenings directly to our 163rd Legislative District, helping make these important services more accessible to our community.
Early detection saves lives, and we’re grateful to Penn Medicine for helping connect residents with the care and screenings they need.

Changes coming to Medicaid
|
Changes to Medicaid, also known as Medical Assistance in Pennsylvania, are starting January 1, 2027, because of changes to federal law. More information is expected to be released, but here is what you need to know for now:
- Some adults will need to renew their Medicaid Plan every six months instead of annually.
- A new requirement means some adults enrolled in Medicaid will need to participate in work, school, job training, volunteering, or other community activities.
If you receive Medicaid, now is a good time to make sure your mailing address and contact information are up to date with DHS so you don’t miss important notices about these changes.
For more information about the new Medicaid requirements, click here.
