Thousands united for an interfaith vigil to show solidarity with the Muslim community in San Diego and honor Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad. The vigil allowed us to pay tribute to them, hear stories from their loved ones, and stand firmly to recognize our shared humanity. This was a powerful demonstration of community and a clear message that we choose to build a future of hope over hate.

Monday’s shooting is an active investigation conducted by the San Diego Police Department and the FBI. If you learn of any information, please share with law enforcement.

Tentative Agreement Reached on Trash-related Fees

City Council unanimously voted to accept a tentative agreement that lowers the trash fee rate in FY2028 and 2029, eliminates paid parking at Balboa Park by the end of the year, and closes the trash fee-related litigation and ballot measure. This agreement avoids the uncertainty of a November ballot measure that would blow a $140 million hole in our revenue projections – a sum greater than the $118 million deficit that we are trying to solve in this month’s budget conversation.

The potential financial devastation averted by this action, and the severe impacts on our city, residents, and employees, cannot be understated. This tentative agreement clears another financial hurdle as we work to protect critical services that residents expect and deserve.

The actions to finalize the adoption of this tentative agreement and to eliminate parking fees at Balboa Park are expected to come before the Council on June 8th.

Fanuel Street Park Playground Reopening

In time for the start of summer and ahead of Memorial Day Weekend, Fanuel Street Park playground in Pacific Beach is officially reopened. Following approximately two years of closure due to damage from the 2024 King Tides, the park features a new playground structure made of materials built to better withstand corrosion from saltwater and seaside weather. Reopening the playground would not have been possible without the dedication of philanthropy, the private sector, and residents in collaboration with the City.

Thank you, San Diego Parks Foundation, and community members, for securing funding. Thank you, Zoom Recreation, for donating the installation of the new playground structure.

SANDAG Bike Anywhere Day

On Thursday, thousands of San Diegans participated in Bike Anywhere Day, formerly known as Bike to Work Day. This year, 116 pit stops were spread throughout San Diego County. This event promotes the benefits of biking, including:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Saving money on fuel costs
  • Providing additional opportunities to exercise

When possible, consider biking as a mode of transportation, not just on Bike Anywhere Day, but every day!
