Dear Inquirer,

House Republicans have been clear about our priorities from the start. Michigan taxpayers deserve better value for their dollars and a state budget that focuses on affordability, accountability, and core responsibilities. That commitment is guiding our work as we review spending decisions made in prior budgets and determine what should continue and what should not.

In recent years, billions of taxpayer dollars were directed toward programs and initiatives with limited oversight and unclear long-term value. House Republicans are pushing back.

Instead of allowing unused funds to quietly roll over and fuel more waste, we put a stop to the multi-billion-dollar rollover practice that keeps bad spending alive long after it should have ended. That is how you begin to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse and restore basic accountability.

Here are some of the most significant actions we took to protect taxpayers:

  • We ended taxpayer-funded welfare benefits given to individuals who are in the country illegally.
  • We stopped the use of taxpayer dollars to pay legal defense costs that help individuals remain in the country unlawfully through prolonged court proceedings.
  • We shut down slush funds that were being funneled to outside organizations promoting ideological DEI programming with little transparency.
  • We clawed back millions of dollars that had been set aside for “diversity festivals” that fall outside the core responsibilities of the state government.
  • We halted continued spending on federally driven green energy programs that would place EV chargers and windmills across the state without regard for cost, demand, or local impact.
  • We ended the policy of placing tampons in men’s bathrooms at taxpayers’ expense, a bad policy that reflected ideology rather than common sense.
  • We rejected additional funding requests from the Secretary of State to further expand her broken websites and contracts with politically connected IT vendors.
  • We also blocked funding proposals tied to the purchase of foreign-made election equipment and new technology contracts ahead of the 2026 election, prioritizing security, transparency, and public trust.

House Republicans are focused on restoring fiscal discipline and respect for the taxpayers who fund state government. We believe Michigan families deserve a government that spends responsibly, focuses on core priorities, and does not treat taxpayer dollars like an endless slush fund.

That commitment is not changing. I will continue fighting to make Michigan more affordable and to ensure that state government works for the people who pay the bills.

Thank you for staying informed and engaged.

Sincerely,

Matt Hall

Speaker of the House
