Dear Inquirer,

Happy Friday, San Diego! Friendly reminder that I will be hosting an El Niño Preparedness Town Hall next Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Mission Valley Library from 9:30 to 11 a.m. - you can RSVP here. I'd really appreciate you sharing this email with a friend or neighbor to help us get this information out to the community. Thanks for helping others keep a pulse on what’s happening in District 7 and beyond.

Pregnancy and infant loss remembrance

The crushing weight of reproductive loss impacts a quarter of couples and individuals trying to start a family. We must make sure we’re doing everything we can to support and care for those affected by this profound and unimaginable type of loss.

That’s why I was joined by Council President Joe La Cava, Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and Sean Elo-Rivera, along with the Institute of Reproductive Grief Care, to proclaim October 15, 2026, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day in the City of San Diego.

Councilmember von Wilpert and I are also currently working together on ways to increase support for City employees who experience reproductive loss. We expect to be able to announce the specifics soon! In the meantime, you can learn more about this important effort here.

CBS 8: MTRP Stairway to Heaven getting nearly $1M upgrade

Thanks to a nearly $1 million grant from the San Diego River Conservancy, a popular hiking spot at Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) is getting a major upgrade. The grant will fund 350-400 new stone steps to replace aging wooden stairs and restore the surrounding habitat.

Commonly referred to as the “Stairway to Heaven,” the staircase leads to the top of South Fortuna Mountain, showcasing scenic views of Mission Gorge, the San Diego River, and downtown San Diego. About 60,000 people hike the trail each year, which has further contributed to deteriorating conditions. Click here for more information.

Speed limit reductions coming to Mission Valley and Linda Vista!

Slowing down vehicles helps save lives as speeding remains a leading factor in severe and fatal collisions. That’s why I voted earlier this year to adopt a new citywide Speed Management Plan – a data-informed strategy to reduce vehicle speeds in areas allowed under state law. The overall goal is to significantly reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

The analysis found that over 20 percent of San Diego’s roadway network is eligible for targeted speed limit reductions in these specific situations:

  • Safety Corridors: Up to 5 mph reductions on corridors with higher concentrations of fatal or serious injury crashes.
  • High Pedestrian & Bicyclist Activity Corridors: Up to 5 mph reductions on streets near sidewalks, bikeways, transit, and activity centers.
  • Business Activity Districts: Reduced speeds to 25 mph or 20 mph on commercial streets with frequent crossings and parking activity.
  • School Zones: Reduced speeds to 15 mph or 20 mph within 500 feet of schools, and 25 mph between 501 and 1,000 feet on qualifying nearby approach streets.

The good news is that these important public safety improvements are being implemented this month in Council District 7! Everyone deserves to feel safe walking, biking and driving around their neighborhood and these speed limit reductions will help create a safer environment for all.

Community service Platform: JustServe.org

JustServe.org is a FREE community service platform that connects individuals and groups who want to volunteer with local organizations and service opportunities that need their help. Cities, schools, nonprofits, libraries, community organizations, and other public-serving groups can use it to identify volunteer needs and connect residents with meaningful ways to serve – all without adding new software or cost to government.

This can be a powerful and useful tool to both connect constituents with service opportunities and to help local organizations find volunteers when needs arise. Truly empowering communities – check it out today!

Tierrasanta Evening Market

The second Friday of every month, the Tierrasanta Evening Market brings Tierrasanta, Murphy Canyon, Serra Mesa – and beyond – together. Join the next market on Friday, November 11, from 5-8 p.m.

The market is a welcoming place where younger families, high school students, alumni, longtime residents, and neighbors of all ages can gather, have fun, discover and support local businesses. It also gives Canyon Hills students opportunities to showcase their clubs and activities, raise money, and share Canyon Hills school spirit with the broader community.
